At the end of the day, it is all about personal taste. So back to OP, good that you bought a iMac. But dont go down the line of starting to hate windows, because Mac & PC's both have there pro's & cons.

Totally agree, I don't hate windows, but being a recent switcher i find that OS X and its bundled software is just far better for me and what i want to do with the computer and how i would like it to perform than it would be on windows.

Some will find windows will suit them better and there requirements than OS X.

I was just replying to to update the posters that kindly offered their opinion/advice a while back.

P.S: Just Pre-ordered OS X Leopard for the 26th via the Apple store.:D

Release date just confirmed today by Apple.

Not many people in the real world have Cerros requirements for a desktop, however I have no problem in running storage well over 1Tb in my Macs, Mac Pros can cope with enormous arrays of hard disks, and a fully spec'd Mac pro has more expansion and power than most other PC offerings if you have the thousands required to furnish all the options (as often covered in PC Pro magazine [a PC mag!]) so it's a non-argument. The performance of a piece of software on a high end Mac vs a high end PC would be virtually the same, if you compare like with like.

I was talking about the RAID5 array. I have one, out of the box on my motherboard - hardware based. No software required. Yes Mac's can now (finally) have hardware based RAID but you have to get add ins so it doesn't "Just work" - which was my point. It's the usual baseless apple marketing and people use it like its some kind of point to be made in an argument that will simply silence all non-believers. You still have to configure things on a OS-X anyway - just as you have to with the initial windows setup, it doesn't just work, anymore than windows does, or any other OS for that matter.

Bit of an assumption there? I was actually balancing out the baseless arguments from the mac fans - they seem to ignorant of the advantages of a PC or any other OS. A bit like their cinema campaign... I can see well enough that OS-X has its advantages just like any other OS but at the sametime, no OS is perfect. If we compare hardware platforms PC and Mac, then sorry but PC will win hands down - simply because it is flexible, it isn't proprietary based and mac by their own admission has had to switch to Intel processors because it couldn't compete with AMD/Intel performance wise. The mac is slowly becoming a PC with a Mac OS and an Apple designed case. The reason Apple hangs on to its remaining bits of proprietary hardware? Only Apple can fix and repair your Mac. Can you remove the battery out of the iPhone? Wonder why? Its funny, Apple come up with such innovative designs and yet somehow miss these little things. Thats why i avoid apple products, anything you buy from them remains the property of apple - like it or not. Apple have done very well to muddy the waters, making it Mac vs PC when really all a Mac is, is a PC with apple parts, a different case and OS-X installed by default. Anything you save on the initial startup costs you pay back when it comes to upgrade or repair time, apple can (and does) hold you to ransom!

When it comes to design it is down to personal preference. Like i said I have a custom case and it has a very nice design - I prefer it to the mac's. But Mac users seem to think its a work of art! C'mon, its a computer! Yes people choose cars based on design (not just looks), so I view it like this: Mac - lotus, PC - skyline... I prefer my skyline to your lotus and likewise for you but like cars - its really nothing to shout about.

Hope you're not referring to me mate, I'm quite the opposite, a bigoted Unix specialist who rememers life before gui's, and OS/X, as a Unix derivative is OK by me.

I'm an Operating System technicianfor a living and I've tolerated Windows and its frequent updates, crashes, slowdowns and malware on my home machines for nearly 20 years now but I'm not going Vista, that's the last straw for me...

You sound like me! I installed Ubuntu at home to play around with but couldn't get on with it until I started Vi'ing the config files, then I felt at home!

Mac's are fine, if they do what you need and you like them then buy one. Personally I prefer PC's because I like gaming and I also enjoy tinkering. I don't really think the argument about Windows crashing all the time is true nowadays either. In the five years or so I ran an XP system it hardly ever crashed, and it was usually due to me messing with things. I've run Vista since January and so far had no crashes.

The one good thing about PC's is that due to the open-ness of the platform it has driven down the cost of computers and led to innovations in the hardware.

There is of course one risk with buying a Mac, it can sometimes turn you into one of those annoying, smug, gits like the bloke in the advert! ;)

That would happen to be a personification of Steve Jobs (with the PC meant to be Bill Gates).

What do you use with Ubuntu for games - I was just using Wine, didn't bother with the paid versions (I heard they were a waste of money). Sadly I am stuck with Windows until Mono has full support and libraries for .NET and SQL Server. But as soon as it does, the .NET 2 will be released no doubt, small price to pay for .NET though.

I used XP for games! I don't use Linux at all now (well apart from at work), just use Vista now.
