I realise that there has only been a couple of "proof of concept" trojans created - none available in the wild - and so we've had about seven years freedom from any form of "malware". But it's only a matter of time. (I know this for certain because all the security experts keep saying it). And the more people that buy Macs, the more likely it becomes that someone will create a virus for OSX. So please DON'T buy a Mac! Thanks.
Got to be one of the most idiotic posts ever on this forum.
Been using macs for over 16 years, and not one has failed me.
But apple should not have moved to intel, big mistake as far as graphical artworking is concerned, runs much slower now.
As for gaming, hmm. More games are being made to run on OSx but can be a little buggy.
So if buying for artwork purposes, i would say go for a high end PC, but for anything else, yes get a Mac0 -
Wasn't Moneymaker joking? It's my problem, it's my problem

Yep, too quick to judge aren't we? Hadn't paid attention to it being Moneymaker who I think actually IS a mac user. That's the problem with just readable text, you sometimes miss when someone is being sarcastic."She is quite the oddball. Did you notice how she didn't even get excited when she saw this original ZX-81?"

Microsoft Office is actually far superior on a Mac than a PC, now thats cool:D
I'd challenge anyone that said a high end Mac gave similar performance to a high end PC - my PC will simply outperform any Mac. I know this because i built it and I have the benchmarks to prove it. Unlike what apple come up with - "it just works" which doesn't prove much when performance matters.
I have over 1 terabyte in my machine, in a RAID5 config, you can't do that natively in Apple's OSX so does it "Just work"? While im not a fan of SLI or Crossfire, my PC is capable of running it and running it at its full x16 lanes - can the mac? Well they just figured out how to get SLI working in x8 but no chance of crossfire - where are the options? I won't even start on their motherboards and how dated they are! Point is mac hardware is way behind and its performance is not anywhere near that of a PCs, if you know how to properly build a PC, you'll get it cheaper and faster then any mac. This is what i hate about apple's stuff, its all airy-fairy marketing crap, none of it is based on solid numbers. Just LOOK at the iphone - its missing so many features, yet people think its the best phone available? Are they that dumb? Do people really buy into this rubbish?
I was actually happy with DOS, just how many people messed with settings back then? Now you've got all sorts tinkering with everything - no wonder why their PCs don't work or are slow, because they don't know what they are playing with! I still use keyboard shortcuts and commands because its faster. Apple also invented the mouse, but then they never developed it, hence why it stayed 1 button for 20 odd years, when PCs have had 7 button mice for the last 7-8 years.
Apple customer service has a bad reputation and its usually down to the warranties. Once they are out, Apple has you and you have no option but to use them for all your repair work - then see how cheap it is! PCs can be easily and cheaply repaired or replaced. Its not just macs, its ipods and iphones, they just suck when it comes to serving the customer. You buy proprietary you pay for proprietary.
I also don't buy "PCs have added software costs because apple stuff comes free with their macs" well its included in the mac, wouldn't say its free! As for added costs? Tried looking? OpenOffice, Gimp, anti-virus, firewalls and a whole load of other free distro stuff can be obtained for exactly, nothing. If Windows is your problem (I'm not a windows fan, especially vista) then all you need is Ubuntu - its got all the bells and whistles that OSX and Vista has and its constantly being improved and to top it all off its free! It will also work with just about anything and because its free and open source people create new things for it all the time, which are also free! Oh and because its Unix based it has hardly any viruses too, so no real no for anti-virus there either.
Anyway, if you hate windows so much - which is what all you mac fans keep bleating on about, why do you need to dual boot or run a virtual machine of windows? Surely you hate it and don't need it so why bother with it? All you get is viruses from it? And yes, your mac WILL get a virus from running windows on it. I will use XP for as long as I can and as soon as I feel Ubuntu covers everything that will be run on vista, i'll switch to it.
And lastly - what is with you mac folk going on about how nice it looks? Honestly? Its a computer, I have a custom designed case and it looks awesome. Black case with silver outline and blue neon lights - what you don't like it? Tough. I have different tastes. You all make it sound like something from Picasso! Did you pick your car based on its looks?Faith is believing what you know ain't so...0 -
If I may drag this out of the boring, tedious and often terribly inaccurate Mac vs PC debate, or in other forums "my car is better than yours".
Personally I use the OS which I can be more productive in for any particular task, in some cases for development and database work it is Windows, for others in design and photography it is the Mac. Neither is perfect, OS X is definitely more secure, Windows has more software available. I use both, I appreciate both. I choose and recommend what is appropriate for a client.
Choice is important it's a great thing we have Windows, Mac OS and various flavours of Linux, the more options buyers have, the better solutions competitors will come up with, it's good for everyone.
Not many people in the real world have Cerros requirements for a desktop, however I have no problem in running storage well over 1Tb in my Macs, Mac Pros can cope with enormous arrays of hard disks, and a fully spec'd Mac pro has more expansion and power than most other PC offerings if you have the thousands required to furnish all the options (as often covered in PC Pro magazine [a PC mag!]) so it's a non-argument. The performance of a piece of software on a high end Mac vs a high end PC would be virtually the same, if you compare like with like.
Speed, Mhz and all the old crazy arguments are dead in the water, both OSes run on the same hardware, so it's the software and efficiency of the programming that makes the difference.
The ability to run another OS, especially in virtualisation is very powerful, and just allows us who need to run apps make for specific environments easier, it also shows how ingenious solutions can be when software is written correctly.
And how nice it looks, design is very important, I don't drive or buy ugly cars (remarkably many people do buy cars because of how they look - if you had whatever money required, would you buy an ugly car or something stylish?!), to me as a designer and one who appreciates both design and ergonomics it is a very important element.
People buy iPods (whether you have had bad experiences with them or not), because they are superbly designed. Did the Murphy cassette player do well, or did the Sony Walkman corner the market - and why, because of the design.
Poorly designed anything (products, cars, computers, software, whatever) deserve to fail, because the manufacturer hasn't thought about how it'll be used.0 -

At the end of the day, it is all about personal taste. So back to OP, good that you bought a iMac. But dont go down the line of starting to hate windows, because Mac & PC's both have there pro's & cons.
As i said in earlier post i use a mac for work, used to be iMac, but got the mac pro afterwards though as the iMac is nice looking. but not very good at running high Adobe products, especially 2 or more adobe programs at once. Hence the Mac pro.0 -

Hope you're not referring to me mate, I'm quite the opposite, a bigoted Unix specialist who rememers life before gui's, and OS/X, as a Unix derivative is OK by me.

I'm an Operating System technician for a living and I've tolerated Windows and its frequent updates, crashes, slowdowns and malware on my home machines for nearly 20 years now but I'm not going Vista, that's the last straw for me...Mike

Actually I was wondering who he was referring to as well, because I couldn't see any poster that really fit that description if I understand what he meant by "xenophobic pc user". And you certainly can't go wrong with a bit of Dilbert (both friends and family have compared me to Wally )."She is quite the oddball.
