Just to Update...
Well I finally went for it, and brought a brand new Aluminum iMac a few weeks back.
and....
Love it to bits. So thanks for all the advice. So much quicker and more enjoyable to use than windows.
Really glad I moved across. So much so that Ive just persuaded my brother who was looking to buy a new PC to get a Mac instead after I showed him mine.0 -

Well best of luck mate.
I bought my daughter a MacBook last June for starting university, cost was a shade over £800.
Initially everything was fine however the thing started shutting down for no apparent reason-long story short they were rushed onto the market far too quickly and had too much paste applied to their heat-sinks-websites full of these problems/ and so called solutions.
Apple released loads of fixes but at the end of the day the machines were and are !!!!!!.
I spent hours on the phone with Apple's CS which is a complete joke.
I demanded my money back last November but the basically stonewalled me and told me 'no chance!'.
The released another fix which appeared to sort the problem and I was told to go to an approved Apple contractor to have it physically repaired but my daughter was away at university with the machine so in the end I simply gave up.
The Macbook still conks out for no apparent reason but it does still work, after a fashion.
I'll never ever buy another Apple computer.Their customer service is appalling and the dedicated Apple followers on the some websites simply refuse to accept that in actual fact Apple are a !!!!!! company and so are their machines.
They do work (when they actually work) better than a PC but I've have owned PCs for about ten years now and have never experienced the problems I have had with Apple.
Yes Windows/MS is !!!! but generally speaking the actual machines are pretty reliable.

I think tonycosgrove was very unlucky. That doesn't help him, but it's a fact. And you'll find this with users of anything, any platform, any microwave oven, any car, etc.
Usually discussing this directly with your local Apple dealer can result in the correct action.
I've owned Macs and PCs for at least the last 17 years, if not longer, both have their strengths and weaknesses, and I still use both on a day to day basis.
I've never had any piece of Apple hardware fail from Macs to monitors and peripherals (including several generations of iPods). I've found their hardware to be made to a much higher standard than any PC hardware I've ever used, and the design can't be matched by other manufacturers. I've had numerous PC items fail from overheating processors (mainly AMD), hard drives dying (ok that could happen to any hardware), boards failing etc. (maybe I was unlucky with PCs?).
I also find that Apple hardware lasts and lasts, I've some ancient Macs still working, that I couldn't part with from years and years back, they can be redeployed as small scale servers. The best older piece is a PowerBook G3 from 2000, that's 7 years old. It still looks like new, holds an 85% charge on it's battery (lasts for several hours), can run the latest OS (find me a 7 year old PC laptop that can run Vista), and is so beautifully made and designed that I could never sell it, it's still great for a spot of writing or accounts.
My current main Mac is a G4 which is 5 years old, it has two massive hard discs, 1.5Gb RAM and zips along with OS X Tiger, running all the latest software, including the full Adobe CS suite. I will probably upgrade to a newer intel based mac at some stage, to get the speed benefit (and being able to run Windows software in virtualisation) but it seems a waste because the G4 is so capable.
They both have their foibles, but in my experience and opinion, Apple hardware can be, and is, excellent.
I haven't touched on the security aspect of OS X either, it is a superb OS which can be simple and easy to use for novices, but contains the enormous power of Unix for power users to achieve some amazing things.
But I still use Windows each day too! I couldn't manage without both.0 -

Believe the current Macbooks are manufactured for Apple by Acer.
I bought my two kids iPods ,totally against the grain BTW,and my son's wiped his entire MP3 collection for no reason one morning just before we were due to start out on a long journey down south.
The web is full of sites describing this particular iPod problem.
Bottom line is that Apple really are no better than the likes of Dell.
Yes the Apple OS is excellent but then again I'm not complaining about the OS I'm complaining about unreliability and very very poor CS from a so-called big name brand who are anything but.
Cheers.0 -
When it comes to ipods etc, Apple do actually have a reputation as one of the worst companies in flouting consumer rights and ignoring the Sale of Goods Act. They point blank refuse to accept liability of repair (when the ipod is bought from them) after 12 months which is contrary to law."She is quite the oddball. Did you notice how she didn't even get excited when she saw this original ZX-81?"

Sorry to hear about the problem you've had in regards to your Macbook.
The problem is there isn't a computer company that i know off that hasn't had problems with their systems, in one way or another.
Ive previously have had computers from Sony, Dell, Hp/Compaq, fujitsu and have come across faulty systems from all of them which have had design faults or have totally failed. And trust me i had some bad experience trying to get them to sort it out.
The main thing is the OS and i find OS X tiger so much better than xp/vista.
I now find that i actually spend less time stuck behind my computer than when i was using windows as i get everything done quicker.
In the end that was the main reason i switched from Windows to Mac. I so far am chuffed i did as i no longer spend more than the required time using it.0 -
I would urge all switchers NOT to switch to MacOS. I realise that there has only been a couple of "proof of concept" trojans created - none available in the wild - and so we've had about seven years freedom from any form of "malware". But it's only a matter of time. (I know this for certain because all the security experts keep saying it). And the more people that buy Macs, the more likely it becomes that someone will create a virus for OSX. So please DON'T buy a Mac! Thanks.0

Probably one of the most ridiculous posts I've ever read. (I know this for certain because ... ).0
