  • I have always used the very old style borax on my hair disasters. Wash the hair a couple of times with normal shampoo but add about a tablespoon of borax to the shampoo in the palm of your hand before applying to the hair. Its great for toning down overly coloured hair and blending in bright highlights, it also removes excess styling products and leaves the hair squeaky clean.
I have a massive bagful from a chinese supermarket.

Well my hair turned out looking great and now I have long black wavy hair again. Thanks for the tip on anti dandruff shampoo lightening your hair. I will refrain from using this now that I've died it black.

Is there any shampoo which will keep it dark?

Boots used to do a shampoo and conditioner with indigo specially for black hair but they don't make it any more :( You could use a protective shampoo for coloured hair, I think L'Oreal Elvive make one. They're not cheap but I suppose you could use up any Boots Advantage points or look for special offers.

yeah, why is it that you dont get a colourprotect shampoo for black hair?
like the ones you get for blonde/brunettes with blonde/brown/red pigments in the shampoo? then again, black shampoo would look a bit daunting!!
i use a general colour protect shampoo, Tresemme at the mo, but still my black washes out after a short while

I have a tip although I have never used it! My friend (who has short hair and it changes colour all the time) swears to me that if you have a hair colour disaster, you should wash your hair in a solution of persil (or I assume any bio washing powder) and water, prefably before any sealing shampoo or conditioner is used. Rinse out thoroughly and watch your eyes!

I'll leave that with you, I just hope you manage to sort it out!

    Good luck!

I was thinking of buying a colour to cover the odd greys that are appearing, but after reading this thread I'm not so sure. Can anyone recommend a good brand of colour that will hide grey hair? Thankyou.

I use hair dye from https://www.herbsgardenshealth.com covers all grey I used to use dark brown now natural chestnut

If like my friend you only have a few greys (I am patchy have been since 14!!) then go to a good hair dressers and get hi lights.

I have long hair and my hairdresser has suggested putting some lowlites through my hair.

    The dilemia is which way:-

    1) The old fashioned cap way
    2) With foil

The reasons I am undersided are:-

    1) Long hair and the cap may not being able to get the colour close to the roots
    2) I've never had chemicals applied directly to my scalp as I've never coloured my hair before.

Anyone had experience of either with long hair?
    Which would look more natural?
Do you have any thoughts or suggestions.

Since this is a Money Saving forum- I can say the cap will save you more money! The fact your hair is long doesn't make a different- the cap is a cm from your scalp whether your hair is long or shot. If you ask me the cap is totally obsolete these days, no one uses them.

I would go with the foils. I have had both methods and if done correctly no dye should touch your scalp. Foils also allow the colourist to mix in lots of different colours which looks far more natural. With the cap you can only have one colour. Mine was redone yesterday and I have 4 different colours including black and a fairly strong red on my mid brown hair. I have had loads of compliments today!

Also the cap hurts!! Having the hair pulled through is very very painful especially with long hair. I have sat there with tears running done my cheeks before now. Since discovering foils I wouldn't even consider a cap.

    ditto!
i have long thick hair and i would never repeat using a cap.
to be really money saving you could always try the do-at-home kits for highlights and lowlights - not used them myself, but the prices are appealing!
