Thanks both of you. I will look at the L-Oreal
It is the fact that I would be going lighter in general that makes me wary. I can see that going darker then adding a few highlights would work.
I would love to try it myself. I really hate paying so much every time.
Is there anyone in the same situation as me - basic brown, turned salt and pepper but dyed blonde with darker bits. If so, do you do your own?Thank you for this site :jNow OH and I are both retired, MSE is a Godsend0 -
Have you thought about shopping round for another hairdresser that charges less?
I only pay £28 for a cut and colour, where other's in my area charge £60+Friends are angels who lift us to our feet when our wings have trouble remembering how to fly.0 -
I'm glad u asked this question cause I been thinking about going my own hair at home. I've looked into the college thing and it will cost about £7 for the cut and about £15 for the colour so I can still do the colour at home cheaper.
My hair is brown and I normally have copper and blonde highlights but I do have it don't different occasionally. I only do it to cover me grey0 -

If you go to the l oreal website http://www.lorealparis.ca/en/haircolor/couleurexperte/index_frame.asp
you can check the colours and how to use it without actually having to buy one first.

hi
i also used to pay 40 quid every few weeks to have my hair hughlighted now i really like the loreal multi tone for a bout 10 quid as mentioned by heavenleigh, my 12 year old daughter does it for me and its better colour than the hairdressers0 -
I use Clairol Nice 'n Easy no. 103 (light beige blonde). Has good shine and highlights. Would recommend it, very natural looking. Buy it at Body Care for cheapness.

Thanks for that links. Its really good and helps u choose which colour to choose0 -
Dont home colour your hair until you've talked it over with your hairdresser !! You have to know your hairs natural undertones to get it right, some people are just lucky when they home colour. I was lucky for years when I was in my twenties and home coloured using Nice and easy (naturally mousey) but as I have got older I had to have it done properly as my hair now seems to have according to three diff hairdresser "lots of warm tones". I was told to colour using an ash blonde by all of them which I duly did. When my son told me it looked ginger  (and no offence or disrespect to anyone who is that colour) I knew I had to get it sorted as it just didnt suit me. I now get it coloured on a training day at my normal salon for £15 instead of £30 and my own hairdresser supervises. And to think that my old hairdresser 10 years ago was charging £70 then for a cut and highlights - no wonder I stopped going to him.Mortgage, we're getting there with the end in sight £6587 07/23, otherwise free of the debt thanks to MSE help!0

The L'Oreal site suggested is excellent. Thanks.
Still not sure though if I should put my current colour as the mid blonde it is after salon colouring or the murky bown/grey it would be if i left it to it's own devices.
Help   This is so scary
Don't want to be walking round with my head in a bag for 2 monthsThank you for this site :jNow OH and I are both retired, MSE is a Godsend0 -
Hiya!
Just wanted to say - not sure if anyone else has mentioned so sorry if repeating it!! - if you have really long hair/very thick hair, I'd consider buying two of your chosen hair dye! I know what its like to not have enough to cover your hair - my hair is very thick and down to just above my hips - partial coverage is sooooo not a good look :rotfl:
Could you ask a friend to help when you apply it for the first timeHave been dying mine since I was about 13 - always helps to have someone on hand to make sure I've fully covered everywhere I can't see
Good luck,
Sarah xx0
