i remember reading somewhere that semi permanent dyes cover the hair rather then work their way into the hair, so they can make your hair look slightly thicker. if that's the case, why not use those every 2 weeks instead of the permanent ones?

it must be hassle to do it every 2 weeks though, but i guess there's little else you can do.

I am going on holiday on Monday, but definitely need a hair cut before I go. I also need my highlights doing, but am a bit weary to have it done before ten days of v hot sun. I probably won't be swimming, but can't be sure!

Any hairdressers/ fellow highlighted people who can advise me please?

    Thank you! x

If you have highlights done before you go when your sunbathing put conditioner on and leave...in the evening wash it out. Should give it like a hot conditioning treatment!
If you decide not to have highlights before you go put some lemon juice through your hair then go out in the sun...should bring out your natural highlights. Remember to wash out and condition well in the evening. ;o)

    Thanks dunabunk!

As long as it won't go green I'll most likely get them done. Going to meet some old uni pals tomorrow night and having been poorly, haven't had my hair done for a good four months.

Guess I'll just be super blonde when I get home! x

  • The age old problem. I have typically mousey coloured light brown hair, which I have had highlighted every couple of months for years. It's always looked pretty natural, so I am told. It is quite a medium, caramel blonde shade - not bleached highlights.

Now however, my roots are coming in with quite a bit of grey which I HATE. Seriously hate. My hairdresser tries to convince me it is not obvious, as they 'blend in' with the highlights, but I don't like that salt and pepper look, and every time I look at my hairline I see gray. (She isn't much help to be honest - I don't think she is very interested. Maybe time to get new hairdresser huh.)

Anyway...do you think it is possible to dye your roots brown at home, and then have highlights done as usual, or would this look odd.

I know this is not of earth shattering importance...but it's really getting me down!
    :o

    Thanks

I would settle for any colour hair!
I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.

    I know how you feel.

My hair is naturally very dark brown. I'm 36 (just) and well it's going very very grey. There's no way I'd get away with highlights. I use the Loreal semi permanant hair dyes. But my hair grows so quickly that I end up with grey roots 2 weeks after dying it.

You can buy the root touch up dye. Can't remember who makes it now. All you can do is try it I suppose. You probably notice it where as other people don't. It's what people are used to.

My gran is in her early 80's and still has dark brown hair.;)

Because I've only ever seen her like that it never crossed my mind that she actually dyed it til a few years ago. The fact that her husband is totally white and my dad (their son) is also almost white too still didn't make the penny drop.:rotfl:

I think I'll go grey disgracefully and experiment with a variety of vibrant colours. What do you think to electric blue or cerise pink?:rotfl:

I started going grey when I was in my late twenties. Like you I had highlights but after a while the grey hairs were too obvious in my mid brown hair. I started using Clairol nice and easy going lighter over the years. I am now very grey/white under the blonde. I think my blonde hair looks very natural looking. My hairdresser says my hair is in very good condition although I am lucky to have quite thick hair.

I am now 50ish but I still do not want to show my grey hair. My brother has had grey hair since he was about 24 but on men I think it looks distinguished.

    Start dyeing

I had highlights for years and finished up with the same problem as the OP. I bit the bullet and went blonde all over.
.................:)....I'm smiling because I have no idea what's going on ...:)

As you dye your hair you will always have the hassle of roots. My advice would be to colour your hair all over and then to maybe add a few highlights to keep it looking natural this should work out cheeper too as you would only need the roots touching up and now and again the few highlights plus the condition of your hair would stay nice
