I had exactly this problem and I agonised over it for about 3yrs before I bit the bullet and grew out the hilights... its taken nearly a year to get to the stage when I could get it cut shorter and end up with silver/grey hair... I am so glad I did it, I am even learning to luv my silver locks... I seem to see more and more woman who just let the grey grow and as long as its kept in a modern cut and clean and silky I think they look great.... no more hilighting and worrying about the grey showing.....:T

Two toned hair looks great on young women but not so good when you get older, especially if one colour's a grey stripe down the middle of your scalp! Maybe you should grow out the highlights like tanith did and see if you like the result. It would be a MSE solution - no more money for hairdye.....

You could try going a bit lighter.

That's what my hairdresser recommended for me anyway (fair-ish complexion and blue eyes, but grey is becoming more apparent!!)

I've been going to him for about 17 years and having highlights for about 12, mainly to give my hair some body as its fine.

He usually only pulls the roots thru (looped thru cap), and although my hair grows quickly I can get away with having it done 3 times a year

  • Going grey/silver is THE HOTTEST TREND right now. Of course, to finish off the look one must be well kept and dress spiffy.
If you are going to have natural grey hair, then in order not to look like a homeless baglady, you must keep yourself in mint condition, proper makeup and the like.
There is an american show, cooking actually - the lady is named Paula Deen (look her up on the internet) She has the most GORGEOUS silver hair....and she is beautiful anyway, just adorable.
But natural grey hair is a trend now........well silver/grey actually, for men and women.
    Embrace your grey!!!!
  • My hair is now nearly 100% grey on the top and I am only just turned 40
I have mind brown underneath, blonde on top and have a couple of different colours running through the blonde on top. It is expensive to keep looking nice, but I am so paranoid about it I am happy to pay. My daughter has just started training to be a hairdresser so it will be cheaper for me in the longrun. :j
Why is there always too much month left at the end of the money :(

I wouldent start colouring your hair yourself, I tried it a couple of times and it look orful, as the colour was "over" the hairdressers colour, and never really blended properly infact it made my roots more noticeable.

I now have blonde highlights on the top of my hair and darker underneath, with shades of caramel etc all over in highlights.

it looks more natural and modern than an all over colour or just highlights on their own.

My hair is below my shoulders, curly, going very grey at the roots, and it hardly shows up. I do have my hair done every month and always use redken products, to maintain the colours put on my hair.

Maybe try to find a mobile hairdresser as they are generally cheaper and someone new may be able to suggest a new colour etc.

I am currently paying £60 every 8 to 10 weeks to have my hair coloured.

I know it is an art or so hairdressers would tell us :D but I wonder if I could make massive savings by doing it at home?

My hair was mid to dark brown. sadly it is now more salt and pepper due to the aging process.

For years I have had my hair coloured proffessionally and I have highlights and lowlights so I assume some lightening agent is involved. My resulting colour is a mid blonde with darker bits.

I spent ages looking in Boots at kits but it is so confusing. Do these which suggest they put in multi tones actually work?

I know if you dye your hair a similar shade to your natural it is fairly easy to do it at home but could I do it?
Thank you for this site :jNow OH and I are both retired, MSE is a Godsend

    Hi hun,

I colour my hair at home all the time, i have have naturally mousey hair but colour it deep chocolate brown and use a multi toner one to put lighter streaks through it.
They are really easy to use.
The one i swear by is the L'Oreal Couleur Experte. There are plenty to choose from and you really cant go wrong.

Have you thought about getting your hair done at a hairdressing college? This is something I am planning to try when our local college opens again in September. Apparently they are always looking for people to practice on, and the trainees are very well supervised so there is very little chance of anything going wrong!
