I don't know about other forums, but I would bet any money that the 'core' group of users of DT (and the Agony Column) use this site only for posting and getting into arguments on those boards.
It's long since been threatened that if it's taking up too many resources and people can't be civil to each other they'll simply get rid of DT. There used to be a sticky written by MSE Martin to that effect.
However, I can picture what you are saying, ie. if they got rid of the DT bit, the trolls would simply post and stir up trouble elsewhere on the site, so maybe it's best to keep them all in one place as much as possible, LOL.
Of course there is a core of argumentative users. That is the nature of a discussion forum. Saying that, there are also argumentative and vicious users in certain of the money boards. You can't simply shut down debate just because some are unable to engage in it in a civil way. It's part and parcel of the human condition and you find these annoying people in pubs, neighbourhoods, colleges etc.
It is up to those who CAN debate to refuse to engage with the unsavoury characters. Besides, posting tit for tat or getting drawn into arguments often causes good intentioned users to be banned.
Once upon a time I knew everything about this forum, but those days are long gone, so please put me out of my misery: what/where is this Agony Column? :think:Be careful who you open up to. Today it's ears, tomorrow it's mouth.0 -
Is the Agony Column connected with the main site and Martin's Twitter / Facebook?
(Personally, I hate Facebook with a passion - I call it Fail book.)0 -

Ha ha, yes I call it the Agony Column because of the number of (mainly) women posting problems, usually of a domestic nature, but instead of Deirdre you get a load of forum users providing the advice! It's also been called other names.. but its official title is the Moneysaving in Marriages and Relationships board, or something like that.
Regarding the annoying people in pubs, etc, no I would disagree there. Yes there are annoying people in real life, but unfortunately anonymity, coupled with the fact that it's all done behind a computer screen, does make people a little.. bolder shall we say.. than they would otherwise be.
In fact a lot of these keyboard warriors are probably quite mild-mannered in real life :rotfl:0 -
I have to agree that DT is a horrible place to be at the moment.
As several people have said, it is currently being plagued by about half a dozen very unpleasant people who think nothing of constantly dishing out massive insults, in addition to berating and mocking people. Then they accuse people of having paper thin skin if they are upset or hurt at the remarks people make. Then they continue to mock.
Some people seem to think it's OK to be vile to someone, and accuse them of having no sense of humour, and being a pansy, if they're offended.
In addition - people on DT are currently being called 'nutters' if they are passionate about something, and get a bit offended if someone says something nasty about what they like; (eg at the moment, it's people who like the Royal family who are getting attacked and called loonys and weirdos for getting a bit upset about the Royal family bashing.)
There are around 5 or 6 people on DT at the moment who are utterly vile, I have never seen the like of it. They are making the most awful comments about people. Some people are refusing to play their little game, and are not 'biting' so they have resorted to calling them whackjobs and nutters. (I imagine in an attempt to 'bait' them.') It hasn't worked though, as the posters have stayed away.
I am not gonna lie: I never report people usually, but I have reported a number of comments this past 2-3 days from certain posters, as they are plain nasty, but the posts remain.
All I can think of is that MSE towers is on holiday. I am hoping that when I come back on tomorrow afternoon, that the posts are deleted, and the posters reprimanded.
I am disgusted with what I am seeing on DT at the moment. You didn't, did you? :rotfl::rotfl:0 -
Remembered another one - trolls and AEs. I'm sure the usual suspects are now signing up as two people at once and arguing with each other, especially Andy. That's not just a DT thing, obviously.
Oh, and j.e.j - I'm a she.Unless I say otherwise 'you' means the general you not you specifically.0 -
Wow! I have my own forum stalker, I feel honoured That people have nothing better to do on a bank holiday weekend than trawl the forum looking for my previous posts and quoting them out of contest. Proves what I said about bullies ganging up to attack people they disagree with.no wonder that this is the how they spend their time when most of us are out enjoying life. I wonder how long it will take them to realise they are on my ignore list and I won't be reading more of their sad little attacks?leveller2911 wrote: »Ironic to say the least............

I suppose when a party leader cheerfully skirts the boundaries of offensiveness in some of the things he has said, it's no wonder some party members feel they have a green light to voice whatever hateful BS springs into their twisted, !!!!!! minds. Sending anti Jewish insults to a Jewish politician? This guy must be a tactical genius, obviously, he's in the right party".
It should ring a bell as you posted it. People in Glasshouses and throwing stones springs to mind..

I didn't need to trawl through your posts Bushbaby and don't flatter yourself re: having your own stalker.
I bookmarked the thread where you said that "Like many others ,UKIP's policies turn my stomach". I asked you at the time what actaul policies that UKIP had put forward actually made you feel phsically sick but you chose not to answer it, which is your prerogative. But its quite a statement to say you feel physically sick from reading their policies.
The reason I bookmarked (which many, many posters on here do btw
) the post was it was quite a statement to make.
Not at all, It proves you are as bad as anyone else on here which is hypocrisy. I don't claim to be any better or worse than the vast majority on here. I don't think its possible to have a gang of 1, ie me. I would also mention that in the years I have been on here the mods have seen fit to contact me twice so I don't believe I am a bully otherwise I would have been ppr'd before now. Twice in 7 years so I don't consider that bad ,do you?.Proves what I said about bullies ganging up to attack people they disagree with.no wonder that this is the how they spend their time when most of us are out enjoying life.
Ah but I'm not writing this reply directly to you , even though you won't be able to help yourself and you will read it.I wonder how long it will take them to realise they are on my ignore list and I won't be reading more of their sad little attacks?
I'm just writing my opinion , after all thats what debating is about. Its entirely up to you if you reply and want to debate the issue.
I will take it that you won't defend what you posted about UKIP voters then?.I'm more than happy to debate this thread but don't try and come across on this thread as being someone who doesn't post nasty, vindictive posts.
Strange how the moderators will clamped down on certain people but allow other posters to openly post nasty, vitriolic post. I do wonder if there is a left bias on MSE.0 -

I'm not usually good at spotting AEs, but there are one or two who have a very distinctive posting style and it's obvious it's the same person. (I won't name them on here, or it'll start another bun-fight!). One, I am sure, keeps a spare user-name for when his other one gets PPRed, which seems to happen quite frequently due to his offensive posts.
There is another one who is on at least his third 'incarnation' on MSE.
It's like Ames says, the PPR system is ineffective. If someone is determined to start another account and disrupt the boards, there doesn't seem to be a way of stopping them.0 -

There used to be more humourous threads and less dogma and hardly any gratuitous offensiveness
I disagree.
The lower usage of DT (how it appears to me anyway) has been going on for quite a while.0 -

To have any real credibility you need to name the posters you refer too.
One poster on the DT royal thread did just that hoping that said posters would be banned. Misguided but honest. So I have some respect for that.0
