I honestly can't think of any really bad hotels, apart from one in Blackpool about 20 years ago!!
Not had a really terrible holiday, however one place I didn't really care for was Sunny Beach in Bulgaria. Felt rather 'ganster run' but our attempts at getting some culture by going to a city nearby were a bit of a disaster as there was nothing to see or do. Not even decent shops. I guess that's just the nature of some countries. On the positive, Nessebar was nice. Our hotel was ok, it was an Iberostar. Room was nice but the food was awful for vegetarians. We used to go out and get pizza and chips, wine and beer and it was rediculously cheap. So I shouldn't really grumble. Cocktails were reasonable too, apart from the argument about my lime based drink having lemons and the waitress insisting it was limes....yellow limes. And then there's the confusion when you ask people something when it's noisy and they shake their head while saying yes, or nod while saying no so you have no idea what's going on lol.
Oh, the Quality Inn Key Largo in Vegas was quite rubbish too. There was a prostitute arguing with the guys in the next room one night.
Have had really good holidays in India and Thailand, but chose 4/5* hotels to have home comforts since standards can be quite poor in these countries. Thinking about trying Vietnam soon too and will go for similar standard of hotel. Some folk think it's not very authentic but it's what I prefer, I still enjoy the holiday. Oh, and I don't always eat 'local' food either. Being vegetarian, we loved the food in India, but in Bangkok we went to Indian restaurants as they were very good and served vegetarian food.0 -

Seconded - had to deal with a group who had been put there by work's accommodation agent not long ago. They were absolutely furious at being treated so shabbily. And a friend had the misfortune to work there a while back, until he jumped-ship to a better employer at the first opportunity.0 -
The Mermaid in Brighton deserves some kind of award...
I stayed there for a couple of days immediately after spending six months back-packing across Africa. During my African journey I stayed in some very primitive places (think earth floors; having to collect water in a bucket...) but it was only at the Mermaid that I encountered lice!
That was back in 1983, so if they are still around they might well have improved since then.0 -

....... as is Britannia Newcastle Airport!
Reasonable bar but told there was a 1.5 hour wait for bar food; restaurant due to open at 6pm, presented ourselves at the restaurant door at 6:02 - five staff stood doing nothing, restaurant deserted ( no-one sat there at all) only to be told they "couldn't seat us for 25 minutes"
Walked over to the petrol station bought sandwiches, pork pies and so on, and ate in our room .Of all the things I'm not very good at, living in the real world is perhaps the most outstanding0 -
the worst places i have stayed in have been in London in the days before tripadvisor took off

I don't think I've ever stayed in a really bad hotel. There was one in California this summer that clearly had money problems but for one night the non working TV (promised to send someone up and didn't -when I mentioned it the next morning it was sorted straightaway ) wasn't a huge deal as there was free wi-fi and I watched on-line instead and when I went down to(included) breakfast it was cancelled but reinstated an hour later and the pool was a bit grubby so I skipped a swim in favour of sitting on their terrace in the sunshine until it was time to leave for the airport. The room itself was clean and the shower hot and powerful. The free airport shuttle was prompt and friendly. For £35 it wasn't bad
Oh there was a B&B in Cork many years ago. We arrived not realizing there was a massive rugby match on and most B&Bs were booked and we had to try several before finding rooms-our rooms were old fashioned and a bit dusty - and it was only at breakfastime we realized that a man walking into our room - staring at us and then walking out again at dawn wasn't a dream as it had happened to both rooms . Weirdly the man showed up to breakfast too- we think he was drunk and was trying to find the right room but that didn't stop us glowering at him the whole time he was eating his breakfast !
I've stayed in some fantastic hotels five star - all the bells and whistles - but most are massive and I don't especially like huge hotels and the nicest five star hotel I ever stayed in was in Florence which was small , old and incredible - modern five stars tend to be a bit souless.I Would Rather Climb A Mountain Than Crawl Into A Hole
