Two of my favourite places are Cyprus and Orenburg (Russia), the latter being where Mrs MbW is from.

Favourite hotel for Orenburg is now the Armada Komfort, which is located near a large shopping mall called "Armada" and is better than my previous choice, the Hotel Orenburg (the staff there seemed to want to treat Mrs MbW as if she was a prostitute).

Also, had the MVD (interior ministry police) called on me as someone made a false accusation that my documents were a load of Horlicks (they weren't, and this was confirmed by the lead MVD officer: he even said that if my documents were invalid, how did I even get into Russia, let alone out to Orenburg?).

Least favourite hotel there is the Hotel Fakel, which is near the city's main railway station (there are suburban stops around the city as well): it shows its Soviet roots; it used to have a restaurant in the same building, but that closed down and was replaced with a shopping centre.

The Hotel Orenburg staff even let a prostitute in one night to wander through the buildings and knock on rooms to get trade.

Really difficult to get the staff to allow Mrs MbW to join me in my room for a short time (they treated her like she was a prostitute).

Can't say a worst country as every country has good points.

Worst hotel, quite a few contenders but the worst was in Guilin, China. To be fair I only stayed there because I arrived at 2am with nowhere to stay and it was a slightly better option than sleeping on the street.

Love Swanage in Dorset, but one holiday with two young children at a B&B was awful. The room they gave us was in a shed at the back of the B&B (they called in a chalet) with spiders and other creepies all over the wall and ceiling. The toilet was a treck down the garden through long uncut grass.
They were amazed when we said we were not going to stay there..."people ask for these "chalets" for preference".
    Yeah right!
Oh - and it was a shared shed, there was another family in the room attached. They didn't stay either!
    Normal people worry me.

This thread reminds me of a trip to Western Australia with a group of travel agents - biggest complaints were "The fish and chip shops don't sell mushy peas" and "The yorkshire pudding didn't taste like home"

Travel is absolutely wasted on some people - fortunately some of the Med resorts do a great job with their resorts that offer, British beer, fish and chips and print the Sun locally for these people who think foreign travel must be just like England but with better weather.

My idea of hell those holidays!

My worst hotel stay was a hotel in Whitby when I was 10 on a school trip. Bedsheets were stained, beds lumpy, drafty windows, inedible food. This was the first time away from home for a good third to half of the class. No wonder many were crying. My school had two classes per school year. We went the first week and the other class went the following week. Didn't tell them about the horrible place

One of the boys' rooms had a hole in the wall the same size as a Coke can standing up!

Worst hotel I have stayed in the Britannia, the airport hotel, Manchester. Had to clean your feet as you left the building. This was in days before I knew of Trip Adviser as I will never make the mistake to staying somewhere without checking some reviews.

Can't speak for worst country, the one I enjoyed the least was Singapore as it felt too clinical, but the people were fantastic and the hotel was great.

Hotel, well, it's a mixture of worst and best! I can't remember specifically which one, but it was a Radisson Blu in Central London, and from googling I think it may have changed hands now. We were outbooked there after flying back from Tokyo.

Reception was absolutely gorgeous, modern, certainly four star quality. Things start to get shaky when we went to the elevator and it was the same size as a coffin, and from the sounds of it was being pulled up and down by a man with a rope.

Exited onto the fourth floor, first impressions was it looked like a Chinese brothel. Carpets looked like they hadn't been cleaned since opening. Seriously nothing like the reception, in fact looked more like a Chinese themed 'motel' in Vegas.

Looked past it, went to the room. Uh oh. Aside from finding a good handful of pubes under the quilt, along with some dodgy stains (I slept ontop of the duvet with a towel underneath me), there was what I can only assume was a chair taken from an old person's home after they had an 'accident'. Big brown puddle right in the centre of it.

I'm pretty sure they nicked the TV out of said old person's home as well, as after 15 minutes of OH trying to wiggle the aerial, we decided to just get p*ssed on some of the sake we had brought back and try to sleep. We were too tired to argue with hotel staff.

Next morning, went in to discover the shower. It looked as if the same person who had caused the brown puddle had then gone in to clean themselves up and smeared it everywhere. I had a shower with two shower proof caps wrapped around my feet secured with hair bobbles.

Then went down for breakfast and, omg, what happened? AMAZING breakfast. They even had proper honeycomb, literally every breakfast food you could possibly think of, and all amazingly fresh. So strange what a difference there was, it felt like we were in a different hotel!

I've been pretty lucky, there was one holiday where my tour operator went bust two weeks before departure & I had to rebook quickly.
We were attending a family wedding so priority was hotel location, this was about the turn of the millennium & I didn't have a home pc, it was just before I got one. Trip advisor wasn't like it is now anyway. As I say I booked on location, it was a bit of a dump. Pool was a bit grotty, apartment was tired, no air c0n!!!

I usually go 5 star, I do like my luxuries, but I do like to travel on the local buses as my immersing myself in the local culture.
The Caribbean is nice, can't beat a Caribbean view :-) the sensatoris are nice too :-)
