How can anybody make money selling things any more?


The price a local shop charges obviously has to include all the overheads like rent, rates, staff's wages, as well as transport to get the goods on the shelf. By shopping from Amazon et al, we are obviously saying we don't want to pay the other overheads, but at the expense of paying for delivery.


Now the expectation seems to be the delivery should be free as well.


I think there is a need for a major re-organisation.
If I was the Green Party, I would call for Royal Mail to use standardised re-usable boxes with RFID. When you receive delivery or collect from a depot, they take back the box. Think about the amount of cardboard saved, and the foam filler! They can use conveyor belts and robots to pack trucks/lorries in the most efficient manner. All I need is a text or e-mail, and I can pick it up myself. This should reduce the cost of delivery, a lot.


Note: Buy shares in Tupperware if this happens.

If your as suspicious and cynical as I am; you'd look at this and see it as an attempt for Amazon to
1. Recoup their losses after having to refund many with an Amazon subscription account.
2. Trying to lure people onto the Amazon subscription account which offers free delivery by default.


I do think they will lose many sales over this and end up having to bump up the delivery fees again. Could Amazon be the next Tesco? Watch this space!

Well they can and do.
Amazon lockers,collect+,Royal Mail local collect to name some.

They did not have to refund anyone. The refunds they did give would not even dent their profits.

No, Amazon will not be the next Tesco, they have completely different business models. I don't think they'll lose "many" sales, people have a tendency to stomp their feet for a week or so and then go back to their same spending habits.

And, since it's always 'today' when you place an order, and 'today' + 'one day' is 'tomorrow', and 'tomorrow' is always the next day after 'today', they can't weasel out of it like that.

The should, in any case, make it clear that it will not generally be 'one day' if ordered on a Saturday. I gather that in some instances they do deliver on a Sunday, but not universally.

Well I will look elsewhere to shop, I tend to use Amazon as cost are often less or competitive when adding p&p on other sites but I will not order if I have to spend £20 for free delivery or incur p&p costs.

I looked at one item as an example today and found of the first 20 sellers cost wise with Amazon @ #1 and fulfilled by Amazon @ #2, the next 18 sellers were all cheaper either by cost alone or cost plus p&p.

I am betting a lot of sellers who use Amazon to fulfil the orders will now dispatch themselves or lose sales if you can buy for less direct with a seller.

I can not be forced into Prime something I have no use for @ £79 a year just to get free delivery.

I wonder how long this will last when they see sales fall???
(They are bad enough at upping their prices by £'s the same day or next days (one item I ordered the other day £8.85, today £14.99!).
