Due to the dire weather on the east coast of Scotland we have decided to take off to Holland for a week.
Have been to Holland loads of times so will only do 3 nights in Amsterdam and looking at 5 nights in Scheveningen, as we haven't been there for many years. We travel all over by train now ( used to drive )
so have been to most places, but it will be warmer than here, and the food is good and cheaper than here!

Back from Madeira. Lovely temperatures there in summer and some great restaurants - every bit as good as our first visit and we'll almost certainly return again.

Next holiday is South Africa - self drive in Kruger, a couple of nights in a private lodge in Timbavati and finishing off in a private house on the Zimbali Estate, near Ballito. Already doing a countdown to 11 weeks time!

A lot of the hassle of Thailand, especially as a single male traveller, is constantly being approached on the streets with offers of "entertainment" but you hardly get any of that in Malaysia, Cambodia or Vietnam - though I'm sure it's all there if you know where to look.

This is the main reason why I'm in no hurry to return to Thailand. The country itself is lovely but if I go to a bar I don't feel the need for 'company'. I find that whether alone or with male friends there's often an assumption that I'm looking for more than a beer.

It's been many years since I last holidayed there but that was my impression wherever I went and I've been to the far north and far south, quite a distance from the main tourist hotspots. I haven't found that at all in Vietnam, Cambodia or Laos. Perhaps I'm a bit too sensitive to it.

Back from our holiday in Greece. It was very hot!!Off to Belfast for a weekend soon.
Interesting about Thailand. I've been tempted to go a couple of times, and was actually about to book flights last year, but something keeps holding me back.I can't get past the sleaziness if I'm honest..

I thoroughly enjoyed my weekend in Belfast recently. Although not actually overseas it kind of felt as though I was abroad.

Forgive me if you know the city but the Titanic Experience is fantastic and I'd recommend this free walking tour https://free-belfast-tours.com/tours/free-original-belfast-walking-tour/

My highlight was the political tour along the Falls road and back along the Shankhill Road (£18 rather than free) https://free-belfast-tours.com/tours/free-original-belfast-walking-tour/

Other than that you'll find plenty of pubs with live music.

As for Thailand, you shouldn't let people like me put you off. It is a beautiful country and I've always had a great time whenever I've been. The regular greetings from girls working in the bars can get a bit tiresome at times but it doesn't spoil the place.

Thanks. Yes know Belfast well and been to the Titanic experience. It really is great city.
Also been to the Falls road a couple of times.

As for Thailand, I hear what you're saying and I'm sure it is indeed a beautiful country, but so is Israel, and I won't go there either.!!

I just don't feel I could enjoy myself in a country that not only tolerates the sexual exploitstion of children , but actively encourages it to keep the tourist dollar rolling in:(

PBC is excellent for stationery in Cambodia. A few branches in PP...I come out with way too much stuff!

Is there something special about Cambodian stationery?

    Just curious.

I have been to Israel a few times but I wouldn't consider much of it as beautiful, to be honest. It's a very interesting country though.

As for Thailand, I don't think that there's a great deal of child exploitation. I believe that the girls are over the age of consent. Some of them do look younger but I think (hope) that that's just looking young.

I should probably point out that I have never been tempted to engage with any of the girls as that sort of thing really gives me the creeps.
