    Hung up my suit!
We are off to the West Coast of America.

The itinerary is broadly planned and flights are booked!

What would you look at along the way?

Yosemite needs more than 1 day IMO
Monterey Bay Aquarium is really interesting
Elephant Seals on the beach around San Simeon/Cambria
If you are planning to drive down the PCH, have you checked whether the road will have re-opened after the bridge collapse and landslides?
LA is a dump - you could take a day (or two) from here to stay longer in Yosemite
Personally, I'd also drop a day in San Fran and add San Diego to your itinerary
    :)

Everything will be alright in the end so, if it’s not yet alright, it means it’s not yet the end
    MFW #4 OPs: 2018 £866.89, 2019 £1322.33, 2020 £1337.07
    2021 £1250.00, 2022 £1500.00, 2023 £1500, 2024 £1350
    2025 target = £1200, YTD £9190

Thanks for the tips - we actually have effectively two days in YNP (although one overnight) but agree we might be cutting that a bit short - need to leave something for a second visit!

Yes - I have seen the news on the closures on PCH - it won't be reopened before we visit which is a shame but I still think its possible to see parts of it without too much doubling back.

I was in LA about 25 years ago and loved it - although I suspect we will stay away from downtown and spend most of out time in the north (hollywood) or coast (Santa Monica).

    Too rushed

Zion needs more than 1 day
Bryce is doable in a busy day
Page is Horseshoe bend;) and what about the Slot canyons there??
    Yosemite needs 3 nights.
Grand Canyon best rim is Torroweap ;)

Are you keeping the car in San Fran-expensive parking and you do not really need it
Going to Hearst Castle at San Simeon?
I'd bin all the days in LA TBHO and add to the above.
I'd also lose 1 day in San Fran

Hope you're going to get the America the Beautiful pass

    However my main question is:-

Being retired "financial experts" why not go for 6-9 months and see the whole country?

I've been to all the 50 states over 20 years with the restrictions of work -Quite a lots of states more than twice.-UTAH !

Surely as retirees you could do the lot in 9 months?

If my retirement goes to plan-3 years from now-we are off around the world for a year minimum on Airline FF miles , IHG points and backpacker hostels

    Helps that we've been to
    90% Europe
    100% USA
    90 % Canada
    90% Australia
    90% NZ
    50% Japan
    50% India
    40% Eastern Europe-Turkey-Russia
    Israel
    Jordan

    Just need to cover
    South America more
    South Africa

    Easter Island is my goal

    All MSE of course. :)
  • Off to Australia two weeks tomorrow! Three nights in Perth, two in Melbourne (early flight though so will be two full days), nine days travelling around Tasmania and then another day in Melbourne before home. I'm aware that's probably too rushed but we're a bit limited due to OH's leave from work. We've been to Melbourne before when we were backpacking five years ago (went down the east coast, along the Great Ocean Road and then up through the middle) but were skint and Australia was even more expensive then, so are looking forward to seeing a different part of the country and being able to enjoy nice food and wine, especially in Tasmania.

I haven't had a proper holiday so far this year - only a couple of long weekends - as work has been so busy but I've just booked off the first two weeks in October. Now for the fun part of deciding where to go. I love spending a few days researching the options, drawing up virtual itineraries and then starting again until a good idea starts to take shape.

Top of the list is HCMC and southern Vietnam having done the north of the country a few years ago but I'm open to inspiration.

Da Lat, Hoi An, and Hue are well worth a look at Dosh. Been to all three, well worth the effort.

If you want a few days at a little touristed [so far] place by the sea, then Quy Nhon is great, went there for an an enjoyable 6 days in February.

Check the weather history for that time of year before you commit.

We're going to Bosnia & Herzegovina at the end of September for a couple of weeks. The total cost will come in under the cost of a return flight to Saigon.

    Thanks, as always, PP.

I've spent the evening playing around with options. I did Hanoi and Hoi An 3 years ago and liked them both but this time I would be looking at HCMC plus one or two other places. Quy Nhon looks to be a good balance between not too crazy but not too dead. I've been told to give Nha Trang a wide berth.

Flights via one of the Gulf hubs (it's too far for non-stop in Economy) look reasonable but yeah, the weather is the main concern. I don't mind a daily downpour but losing whole days would be a pain.

I've got all weekend to think about it but I want the main flights booking next week then I can start filling in the gaps or may just leave it open and follow my nose.
