SSE broadband feedback

I'm in the same boat as some above: I'd like to switch from TalkTalk (the latter's newly announced price increase allows me to exit my contract mid-term) but the SSE site doesn't recognise my phone number, presumably because of TalkTalk's LLU. Even if I can do it by talking to SSE on the phone, I'm worried the switch won't be smooth. Since I depend upon my broadband, I guess this mean's I'm effectively held captive my TalkTalk. I'd really like to hear from anyone who has successfully and smoothly transferred away from then….
When I switched to TalkTalk I was never told anything about LLU, let alone that they would change the nature of my line so it was troublesome and expensive to switch away again. I'm amazed that those charged with promoting competition in the market allow this kind of issue to arise.0 -
Yeah I was wondering the same thing - the website didn't recognise my phone number. I had no idea there was any such thing as different lines. TalkTalk came round and put a new line in when I moved in here as they said there wasn't one (there was a box on the wall and everything just as you'd find in any other flat, but I suppose it can't have been connected up to anything), but surely it's all the same wiring from the box on my wall out to wherever the line goes when it leaves my flat? It's not as if they had the road up or anything!
I can see this must be me being stupid, I just can't see how I'm being stupid, if you see what I mean.
As a result I will probably stay with Talk Talk despite the higher fees that they're now charging me as my initial offer period has run out. I've never had any problems with them like other people seem to have done, so for me it could be a lot worse, I'm just surprised to discover that I don't have a "real" phone number/phone line!0 -
Just a pure guess now. BT Openreach is sitting on a mountain of ADSL circuit boards in cabinets. What are they going to get if they try to rip them out? A load of engineer's overtime costs and a landfill nightmare. Call up some low rent MBA pals, and do a deal.
In two years time, nobody will be on ADSL any way.
1. There are no ADSL circuit boards in cabinets: ADSL comes from the Exchange, not the local cabinet.
2. There will be many places, me included, whose cabinets are not included in any BDUK or BDUK-SEP program so will be on ADSL for the foreseeable future. I am 7 miles from a city centre not half way up a Welsh mountain either. In truth I expect FTTC to come here sometime between 2017 and 2020.
There are also many places in London which is not covered by the BDUK/SEP public subsidy programs (as its not rural) who are not on superfast FTTC and seemingly have no hope of being so.
3. Finally there are some properties who are so far from their local cabinet that bizarrely they get a better ADSL service from the exchange than FTTC from the cabinet.0 -

I'm at the end of my contract with BT for Infinity 2 and phone. It's been fine and we've had BB download speeds of around 55-70mbs but it is expensive (the 18 months were ok with Quidco cashback and a six month price reduction to start but now I can save £20 per month by going elsewhere). I want to look at other options (e.g. SSE and Plusnet). However I get to the point of entering my tel. number and then the site tells me that I can get 20.8mbs max and that I can only have 38mbs (the Superfast option). I want the Ultrafast 76mb. The same thing is happening with the Plusnet site and Zen. When I queried this with a Plusnet marketing person through their online chat I was told that they can only offer what BT Wholesale tell them. So why is BT Wholesale information saying it is 20mb max when we are actually getting 55-70mb through BT's own Infinity 2? Is the BT Wholesale line check wrong or is BT allowed to limit what their competitors can offer? Or is there some other reason? Can anyone help? I'm feeling trapped by BT
. My only other option seems to be to go to Virgin but it seems costly (I don't want TV bundles - we only watch about 10 hrs per week).

Although not mentioned in the MSE article - Northern Ireland appears to be excluded from the SSE Broadband deals!
SSE confirmed this on a phone call with me just now. Perhaps the MSE article should be updated to include this, along with the fact that anyone signing up should purchase via topcashback to make the deal even cheaper.
The reason I got from SSE is that "BT Openreach don't extend their service to Northern Ireland" - although I'm not sure what this means. Does anyone else know - or when that might change?

Oh dear, they are going to make me work for a definite answer . . . . .
My Enquiry Message ( to SSE ) about Carrer pre-Select with SSE:Everyday broadband & phone. Please confirm whether phone calls will be able to use CARRIER PRESELECT SERVICE ( e.g. 18185 ). This is major decision point for me. If C.P.S. is possible I would need to confirm that this would not change during the duration of the contract.
Many potential customers will be interested in this - I suggest that you add to FAQs to preempt repetitive questions.Dear Mr [malakoffee]
Thank you for your email and sorry for the delay in my response.
I am sorry but I am not familiar with the 18185 service. I can confirm that in general terms services that require a number to be entered prior to the number to be dialled will work as long as the numbers are valid service in operation.
I would advise to contact the company that run the 18185 service to confirm if this will be available on any BT Openreach line irrespective of the provider. As we do not operate the 18185 service I could not confirm anything relating to this.
As a telephone provider we effectively bill you for the calls that are made form your land line if the service is a valid number and can be called from the land line then it will be available with any provider normally.
Kind Regards
xyz

Do I have to change e.mail address when leaving BT for Plusnet & what about all the details stored on BT's site?
Would I have this same problem every time I changed broadband supplier, or is their another way!0 -
Been on to SSE and the lady was really friendly and helpful, there is NO £37 new line fee, everything is free to set up with No postage fee for the router. She told me straight what the speed would be for me which is 4mbs nowhere near the speed of my virginmedia but they wont be depleting my bank account nearly as fast as virginmedia either at just £12 p/m. It will be fast enough for what I want hopefully but a little worried about catch up tv. Finally chose SSE after thinking hard over a 15gb 4Gee Osprey mifi with ee for just £15 a month with the code osprey05 as the speed would be far greater and portable also but may run out of data using catch up tv.0
