moving in

Completion is looking at next week for my first place. Stoked.

This thread is for any extra advice or tips.

- Now, do I contact the bank to arrange a mortgage payment date?

- I won't be properly moved in for a week or two after getting keys...so does this matter with gas elec/water/council tax or am I automatically liable on move in day?

- before I move in officially I'm getting a room re floored and new locks. Anything else in the vain of the latter (apartment)

- obviously then I look at cheapest contents insurance, broadband, gas elec and arrange water and council tax in my name with relevant readings. ..apartment nothing else?

- I have a few bits of furniture. I'll be using nationwide cash back credit card and various cash back sites or discount codes to buy from eBay, ikea etc

My solicitor gave an estimate of local searches to be 150 but I paid 300 or 350...seemed high. May query that?

Anything else. .

    Have you Exchanged?

    If not, don't count any chickens and don't make any firm commitments.

    Search fees are set by the local authority and vary from council to council.
    I won't be properly moved in for a week or two after getting keys...so does this matter with gas elec/water/council tax or am I automatically liable on move in day?
    The previous owner continues to be liable until whatever future date you choose to take over.

    Ensure you take meter readings as soon as you move in as you will need these for your electricity supplier. You are liable for gas, electricity, council tax etc from the moment you complete. It then becomes your property and everything that is associated with it.
    Eat vegetables and fear no creditors, rather than eat duck and hide.

    I signed contracts a week ago. I'm FTB and vendor has no chain. Solicitor contacted vendor solicitor and they said they're good to go. I'm guessing contracts were exchanged last week. Everything has been swift. Mt solicitor will send me a total bill next week and I'll pay right away. He's advising of completion date of Friday. Possibly week after. I don't envisage much deviation from this time line.

    Doesn't sound to me as if you have exchanged! We signed contracts ages ago and still don't know when we will exchange. And I think the completion date is confirmed on exchange day?

    Again, it doesn't sound like you've exchanged. You'll know when you have, there certainly won't be any guessing.

    Take pictures of meters too and check carefully if they are day/night I didn't realise our electric meter was and a year on from moving it turns out our supplier has messed up :mad:

    @catoutthebag, the completion date would have been written into the contract when you signed it, so did that specify Friday as your completion date?

    Also, what do you mean by:
    Vendor solicitors said he wants me in 8th May latest I think
