@catoutthebag, the completion date would have been written into the contract when you signed it, so did that specify Friday as your completion date?

Also, what do you mean by:

I didn't read them. I just signed all the spaces he asked me to :rotfl:

I assume my solicitor will write on the date post - signing when it's confirmed.

He said he's going to devise a final bill first and needs to contact my bank or something.

Re other thing...I guess that's the vendors solicitors latest deadline AFAIK

This, definitely! Take pictures of both meters (gas and electricity)in both your new house and your old house. In our experience utility companies are completely incompetent.

We've had to refer to our pictures twice. First they kept saying we hadn't sent the readings when we had and then they kept trying to say we owed money on our old place, which was on a prepayment meter, because they tried to estimate the reading.

£350 sounds about right for searches. I think it varies depending on how many you do and what the local authorities charge.

I'm no expert, but I think you should take over the utilities, council tax, insurances etc from the moment you 'complete', i.e. the day you receive the keys and the property is officially yours.

Whether you choose to actually move in on that day is another matter, but you'll be needing to use it's utilities for any work you have carried out prior to physically moving in. And hence you'd be responsible for these bills.

This thread confuses me. Is this in Scotland? Is the exchange process different in Scotland?

This definitely isn't how houses are purchased in England.

I thought it was England. Why would you think it wasn't? I think it's exactly how the process goes in England, but not sure it has actually happened for the OP.

Well OP is referring to signed contracts as if that's meaningful, and "guessed" they would have exchanged by now.

Not sure why 1 or 2 are confused?
I signed 1 week ago. I assume contracts were exchanged last week or will be this week.
My solicitor has sent me a final bill today which was paid immediately by me and he's proposing to other party solicitors a completion date of Friday.

Thanks re: utilities. Need to find some cheap deals.

Quick diversion: I'd like broadband but don't need use of a phone line. ..I understand I don't need one installed depending on the area so I don't have to pay line rental or something. ...how'd I find out About this situation?

Another question he mentioned at the time which I didn't really recall at the time.

    Service charge.

I believe the vendor has a bit outstanding on the balance but my solicitor is requesting an 'apportionment' from the other party solicitor which I'll then have to pay? But my solicitor I think mentioned me then getting a refund? Don't understand - isn't the vendor liable for this? ! Who/how do I get a refund?
