Excess baggage charges are fair, if they didn't exist people would be checking in everything including the kitchen sink.
But it can feel a bit unfair if the person sitting next to you weighs twice what you do, and you've had to pay excess baggage charge on a couple of kilos.
.................:)....I'm smiling because I have no idea what's going on ...:)

Comparing bank charges with excess baggage charges does not mean I have incurred either!

I don't disagree with the airlines' right to charge whatever they like for excess baggage - it's a charge for a service.

But it is also very true that the charges are excessive compared to the incremental cost to the airline of carrying the extra weight.

If an average Ryanair fare is £100 - and it probably is somewhere around that - and the average customer weighs 12 stone = 168 lb = 76 kg, they are charging less than £1.35/kg for the passengers. So to charge typically £5 per kg for excess baggage is almost four times this!

Sorry - probably get slated for this but if only got hand luggage pay the £'s to avoid the check in queues and go straight to security and also priority check in on the plane = means you beat the huge queue of people pushing and shoving - I love Ryanair as I can afford to go places and ensure I only take 1 handluggage bag and also that my handbag fits into it in this country going out - not a problem most places coming back. Dont take bottles of stuff = you can buy most things whereever you go - just the necessities of life and enjoy a lightweight holiday (waits to be slammed for this post!)
Saving in my terramundi pot £2, £1 and 50p just for me! :j

Ah, Susan, you shouldn't get slammed - it's great that you can travel light like that.

But other people, especially those travelling with children (or just hopeless for packing too much, like us) can't do it as well as you. ;)

    Susan, you are so right.

My Russian friend is in USA at the moment and, somehow, there is only 30 minutes between connecting flights on her journey back to Russia next month. I think this means she is confined to hand luggage for the return journey.

She will probably have to dispose of items (clothes etc) she took to USA just so she can get back home There will be little room for souvenirs.

its groundhog day everyflight with ryanair, you have to be at the front when check in opens or its a nightmare

With the exception of one flight, I have never had any delays at check in, and I never arrive until 1 hour before the flight time.
    Gone ... or have I?

well i have been on plenty where the queues stretch back and all you can see is bits of paper being handed out for excess charges which holds up things or suitcases being opened at the front of the queue, or the argument starts about "what the internet said" is different to what the check in staff are saying

i wouldnt be brave enough at stansted to arrive with only 1 hour before flight time

maybe im impatient, and to be honest its not every flight, but standing behind people in a queue who are arguing or being stubborn as 2 posters in this thread have been winds me up

there does seem to be a get one over on ryanair or cause a stink mentality which i just dont see with easyjet

The bottom line is you know what the rules are and you know what the charges are.Its up to you what you take.Ive had people in front of me in the ryanair queue paying 1p for a flight and moaning because they had to pay excess baggage. How do you think we get flights 1p.Its all the extra charges that keep the cost down. I know they are not the best airline in the world but you have a choiceI,f you are not happy dont use them again. Every company has its policys. They are there for all to read. The thing is we see a bargain and dont read terms and conditions and when something goes wrong and you have to pays its the end of the world. BA Air France and all the major airlines have t&c.

oh yes the moaning, i reckon the worst offenders for having a moan are the well to do travellers , who seem to want as many people to overhear as possible thats not how they normally travel and how ghastly it all is
