Really sorry for the feeble excuse. To be honest I don't fly regularly so would not have thought to use a spare check in. As it was there were only 4 check ins and all were being used, This was a really small airport. We did not arrive terribly early for the flight as we had the hire car to fill up early in the morning and being in France most UK cards don't work in their 24hr petrol stations, as you may be aware, also the car hire depot was not open until 8.30am. But thanks for the tip I will bear this in mind next time we fly.

I actually feel the excess baggage charge was fair as I was expecting to be over and to have to pay, not paying would just have been a bonus. As mentioned before the biggest annoyance is having to struggle with cabin baggage which would quite easily fit into the suitcase.

i think we can safely assume that original poster knows the terms and conditions of ryanair, he/she remembered the exact weights at stansted, and even the travellers weight infront, quite a nice saving was made

it was simply a case of blagging something for nothing and it backfired, and then try and blag a refund from ryanair

i have no time for travellers like that, i see them time and time again in ryanair queues, holding up the queue and arguing with check in staff when they know they are in the wrong

the sure sign its a blagger/liar/cheat in the queue and not a misguided traveller who does not understand ryanairs rules, is the blagger wont turn around and get confirmation/back up from anyone else in the queue, and ignores someone with the truth who dared to step up and help

seen it too many times , no sympathy for the original poster at all, a nice move by murcia check in staff well done

    Thanks for the reply.

We normally fly from relatively large airports so there are always oodles of check-in desks to play about with.

I do actually agree with you that some aspects of charging are illogical:

    - not allowing pooling of allowances is completely unfair especially for families with children. We have one child now, and it would be a right pain taking three suitcases @ 15kg when 2 adding up to 45kg would be far more suitable and convenient. If/when we have two children that will get even worse.
    - not weighing hand baggages is illogical and unfair. It's all on the plane; it all costs them money in fuel. They should weigh the whole lot and give you an aggregated allowance of 25kg - as, for example, Thomsonfly/Flyglobespan do.

But then the latter suggestion causes Thomsonfly/Flyglobespan to be slagged off because people don't expect their hand baggage weight to be included. You can't win with some people!

In fact, just to finish off (and get myself finished off by other MSEs probably) all airlines should weigh the passengers and all the baggage (hold or hand) because they are all flying. Why should I pay excess baggage as well as a full fare for my daughter who weighs 1 stone 9lbs when some bloke gets on for nothing weighing 25 stone but with only 15kg of baggage?

I am a pretty new flyer too. I could not believe that airlines do not measure or weigh hand-luggage, especially after all the trouble I took to buy a correct size case and ensured my cases weighed 9.9kg and 19.9kg! I thought to use a spare weighing machine too before I checked in just in case my scales at home were wrong.

Judging from the airline series on TV it seems that many budget flyers love to get something for next to nothing and then want everything! But, I must admit, the overweight baggage charges are excessive and seem to amount to a 'fine' rather than the true cost of the extra weight. Maybe this is something up for challenge in the courts - just like bank charges?

Well I hope you fail. To be honest, the worst thing that happened to many people is being able to "reclaim "their bank charges.
The courts have now endorsed sloppy money handling.
For someone to reclaim thousands means they must have went in to "unauthorised" absolutely hundreds of times. You wont beat the banks. They will claw this money back other ways. Unfortunately , people like Me who run good accounts will end up paying.
The same could happen with airlines. Some (I bet they are, they always are) fat sweaty moron will take a budget airline to court, win their case and we will all end up paying more as a result.

I have wanted to say exactly that for so long, just didn't dare! ;)

I've never had a bank charge in my life, not because I have endless money, but because I manage what I do have. Now, it looks like I am going to be charged for the privilege of keeping my finances in order. Will those who have claimed back thousands manage their accounts any better? Not a hope, what is the incentive now?

We had the same thing happen a few years ago but I stood my ground and refused to pay and said we would take things out of the case to carry as handluggage. They said it was too late as the case had already gone but after a standoff someone went and got our case, I took out several carrier bags of wallnuts we were taking to the UK for a hospice to sell at their Christmas fair, case now at correct weight, we went through security who thought our handluggage strange and searched everything. On the plane there was a terrible smell in our area, everyone looking at each other to see who was to blame, it wasn't till I got the bags out of the overhead locker i realised one of the bags was some ripe cheese we meant to throw in the bin as we left, must have got it mixed up with the bags of wallnuts!

and as you were standing your ground and refused to pay knightstyle everyone else in the queue was standing waiting and waiting, its groundhog day everyflight with ryanair, you have to be at the front when check in opens or its a nightmare

as for the bank charges budgetflyer, yes i have sympathy for your post and like me i dont want to pay for bank accounts in the future, but just cos fools and their money are easily parted it dosent mean banks can rip them off, its probably martin lewis who will be to blame if it ends up like that, his one man crusade got a lot of publicity
