I never quite got around to it Ed, I had to print off some stuff then send it away, the printer was out of ink at the time so I missed out on it, If I had bought when I planned on it I wouldve made a tidy wee sum tbh. I tend not to put too much into shares though, only what I can handle losing if worst comes to worst0 -
We chatted about retirement and plans for the future, what exactly is it we want, we kicked a few ideas around, the idea of selling our current house living in a caravan in summer and buying somewhere abroad for winter, the idea of keeping our house buying a van or motor home and travelling abroad for winter, the idea of keeping the house and buying a small place in a country somewhere like Thailand or Cambodia etc where it is cheaper to buy and wintering there.
We chatter about things we want to do this year, how we wont be able to afford to go away on holiday as we have had to spend excessive amounts on various things, but how we still intend on doing things, like spending time in the polytunnel, going wood hunting etc, Mr El found out that in the village we used to live in ( where Master El lives) there is a production of Hamlet at the local castle, and how Mr El, Master El Master El's Gf and myself will be making a night of it, we will picnic in the castle share a few bottles of wine and stay at Mr El's parents house for the night ( have asked permission, they happily agreed we could stay)
Thailand is our favourite place after honeymooning there.
I wonder if the location of the Hamlet production is the one we are thinking of going to?
It is great that you are both able to have those conversations, ours are quite one-sided, but you have given me an idea on how I can try and inspire some 2-way conversations.MFW 2025 No. 7 £1530/£2700

Welllll today has been a very interesting day, today I had a full day off of work, so decided to have a wee sneak peak at the finances, now that my phone is gubbed and I cant access the banking app I tend not to check it out every day like I used to. So today imagine my surprise when I discovered that this month I will hit a new target when the monthly payment comes out
The day progressed however, later on I went for a wee snooze ( well those 5.30am starts kill me I must say) and whilst there it came to mind that after this month I will not be too far off of having the mortgage offset, this is ofcourse if I take every single bit of our savings into account, but it will happen soon, that soon appears to be sooner than we think though, I got up had a wee sneak at the savings account and it appears that my funds have been working harder than I expected. So by the end of this month we will be offset, the enormity of that is still sinking in. Yes we have a long way to go and it is just a start of the new way of financial thinking, but at the end of this month Mr El and I will be offset on the mortgage.
Now then this obviously got me to thinking as well so I contacted a friend and asked for advice, the question was should I continue to pay off the mortgage or start hitting the pension. Now her advice was very sound, and I was sorely tempted to follow it but the conversation continued and the challenge of retiring at 55 was put out there, my reply was no chance its gonna be hard going getting to retire at 60 and there and then it hit me, I really need to make every single penny work for us, so the answer is going to have to be I will slow down in the mortgage overpayments and will start hammering the pension, I am going to put the chunk of money into the pension and the Tilly tidies and extra bits every month into the mortgage, that way both will get some money.
Yes it will mean that it will take us longer to pay off the mortgage but we will get there and in the mean time we will be hammering the pension so that we will stand a chance of retiring early. It's still going to be 60. So now I have to grab a pen and paper and work out the exciting new plans that will be hatching shortly0
