My apologies for asking a question which was indexed but even after you told me I searched the index and couldn't find anything, I don't know where I go wrong!
That's OK, honest, there's a HUGE amount of good stuff here on Old Style to try and keep track of.

We have two kinds of indexes here...

    Our Collections:-

These are indexes of the posts in single threads that are very long and have LOTS of posts in them. You can find them by using the "Our Collections" link in my signature any time you see it, or easier still, you can use the "Indexed Collections" link that you'll see in the blue bar at the top of every page. These include our Recipe Collection, Breadmaking hints and tips and recipes, Slow Cooker, and smaller ones on things like home made gifts.

    The MEGA Index:-

This is a collection of complete threads covering all aspects of things Old Style. There are over 3,000 threads listed in there, and the whole purpose was to make it easier to find things if the search function (which hates everbody) can't help you. I've even failed to find threads that *I* started before now! :(

My nanna used to eat a spoonful of 'Bicarb' as she called it to ease sore throats or something (except she ate it every day):confused:

Hi, Donna! Bicarbonate of Soda is used to aid indigestion, as it neutralises the excess stomach acid.

This is also why it's not good to add it to veg. It keeps cabbage bright green, but neutralises vitamin C, otherwise known as ascorbic acid.

I'm sorry to bring up a topic that has been discussed so many times - I did use the search function and found a few interesting threads but none of them answered my question.

I'm making soda bread, and the recipe asks for 1/2 tsp bicarb and 1/2 tsp cream of tartar.

I have bicarb but not cream of tartar. Can I do without?

Or, (providing my local shop accommodates) can I use baking powder instead of either?

I've never made bread before :o

    Hi fac73,

I wasn't sure so I had a look at this website useful substitutes and it says you can substitute cream of tartar and and bicarb for baking powder. So I think it should work the other way around.

Thank you pink-winged. It worked fine with baking powder, although I didn't quite cook it for long enough - but now I know for next time :)

Baking powder is bicarb, cream of tartar & sometimes cornstarch

(Bicarb is alkaline, tartar is the acid which makes it rise)
