If your Dad wants his wealth to rise and fall with the market plus dividends then yes, he should put his money into an index tracker. Assuming that he wants to follow the FTSE100 then I would suggest one of these:
https://www.ishares.com/uk/individual/en/products/251795/ishares-ftse-100-ucits-etf-inc-fund?siteEntryPassthrough=true
or
http://www.morningstar.co.uk/uk/etf/snapshot/snapshot.aspx?id=0P0000WA5M
Both have low expenses attached to them (0.07% for the ishares and 0.09% for the Vanguard), both appear to be genuinely invested into the underlying index rather than being synthetic products.
As these are ETFs you should be able to buy either one using a regular broker so can cut Mr Adviser out of the picture. FWIW, I suspect that the reason he is putting your Dad into and out of lots of products is because he is scalping your Dad for commissions.
Thanks Gen. I'll pass that on.Further discussion revealed other coincidences in holiday choices. Now thinking if we should ask them if they would like to try a trip together with us. We used to have some hoidays with friends but the loss of one of them ended that and another couple have changed direction so far that they do not holiday together so would not make a foursome.
Not for every holiday, but for some, I like the dynamic of being away with friends rather than as a simple couple. What do other NP do?
Not sure if shared experiences made us better friends or if being good friends made better experiences, but I miss whatever it was.
Had some great holidays in my twenties as a group of 3 couples. A few later as a group of two families with kids (with one of the other couples from the original group). Even one or two with that family once my family was no longer headed by a couple.
Don't "go on holiday" any more. Haven't done for years now. It wouldn't be a holiday for me without another adult to talk to, and there isn't anyone we could go with. I do take my kids to stay with my brother and his family, or my other brother and his family, or my in-laws, or my kids' various godparents. That's all, though.
Miss holidays. Miss going on holidays as a couple. Miss being a couple to go on holidays as.
Spirit, is there a reason why you and Mr Spirit can't go on holiday with the remaining partner of the couple of which you lost one?? Or with that person and one member of the couple that holiday separately??Do you know anyone who's bereaved? Point them to https://www.AtaLoss.org which does for bereavement support what MSE does for financial services, providing links to support organisations relevant to the circumstances of the loss & the local area. Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.0 -
I nominate maggie. No good reason. Someone has to do it and she is as good a person as any. A person with 99.998% of an arm is prolly better able to do it than someone like me with 75% of a pair of parotid glands.
(maggie is perfectly welcome to tell me to mind my own BTW and I won't get upset).
Another vote for Maggie.
I like birdseye peas or petit pois, other brands I find taste mushy which I can't stand - is not liking mushy peas a posh alert?
A little fed up, I seem to be having trouble controlling my headaches, went to the docs who referred me to a specialist via bupa, tried to book the appointment and apparently the employer policy renewal year has just happened and something has gone wrong so bupa can't authorise at the moment and bupa have to be contacted via the broker who failed to answer the phone on Thursday or FridayI think....0 -
Strange what people are allergic to, I have a friend allergic to kiwi and another allergic to cherries.
Kiwi isn't that uncommon. And depending on exactly which kiwi protein is the problem, your friend may be allergic to latex too.
My ex was allergic to mushrooms. So mushrooms became my treat when eating out/ he was out etc.
Speaking of kiwis, hope the 'Inrateses are doing well.0 -
I thought everyone found that kiwi gave them a funny tingling in their mouths until an allergy doctor for DS said no that was special to me. I have also found I am suddenly pretty allergic to peach which I never was when I was younger and whichever tree it is I am allergic to (Hazel?) has started up already this yearI think....0

I hat mushy peas.
Worrying BUPA broker problem - what would happen if you needed urgent treatment?
Normal headache questions - do you grind your teeth at night, do you drink enough, are you stressed, do you ration your caffeine intake?I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards. I am a bit worried as the coverage needs to be continuous or there is a problem about 'pre-existing' conditions not being covered.
Don't think I grind teeth although there are some issues with posture and pc use and eyesight may be a problem because of failing near vision adjustment. Stress not too bad at the moment. Headache is neither typical tension headache nor typical migraine.
Do any NP have any top vegetarian (or fish) recipes? They should be cheap and easy to prepare and children frioendly. Later this month we have a paying guest for two weeks who is a vege (15 yo German girl if that makes any difference). She eats fish but niether DD2 nor I are very keen on fish and we would sooner only cook one meal a day.
My vege repertoire consists of cauliflower cheese, baked potato and cheese, ratatouille with cheese, and eggs...oh and quorn mince spag bol which tastes gross.....I think....0 -
For veggies, just make quiches, making sure the fats and any cheese you use are vegetarian.
Also make pies and pasties.
Vegetarian doesn't have to be "hard". It can simply be "what you eat now, but without meat".
Bean burgers are nice, served with wedges.
Tortilla: spuds, random other stuff, eggs, fry into a big omelette.
Linda M's veggie sausages with the red onion in are super fab tasting.
Fish pie, made with fish, white sauce, topped with mash = vegetarian that is ok with fish.
Jacket potatoes are veggie too. Spuds all round then a "help yourself" buffet of toppings and salads so you're not putting "funny foreign stuff" on her food for her.
Pizza is veggie .... cheese/tomato/onion/peppers/pineapple .... just have to watch the cheese for being/not vegetarian.0 -

That is funny, I am the same with peas. I will buy birdseye peas but only petit pois if it's own brand stuff.
Hate mishymushy peas. Nasty.
Take it easy, mister. When will you be able to see someone about the headaches?Everything that is supposed to be in heaven is already here on earth.

Usually companies moving health insurer providers get all existing conditions that were covered under the previous insurer included with the new one as a matter of course. If that wasn't the case companies with a large number of employees would never be able to move providers.
Fish is easy to cook, salmon is a good choice if white fish is unpopular. (Just put it in the oven on a baking tray covered with foil.)
Jacket potatoes would be easy with a choice of fillings.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards. Yep - looks like fish it is plus something else easy for those who don't like it.
The danger is that the broker has fooked up the renewal resulting in a break in cover at which point presumably everything becomes pre-existing....I think....0
