I think you work harder on treadmills than running on the road. Just my anecdotal experience.

I have been using the one at the gym which simulates different hilly environments. Treadmills aren't bad now, but they don't beat outdoor running.

I have been doing the High Intensity training class at the gym. It turns out I am the only guy with 13 other girls, mostly half my age ...

....can't really remember much about the exercise ;).
I'm sure it seemed tough or something :)

I think it's important to have a training program. I paid for an instructor to put one together, which arrived this morning. Too much too soon and you run the risk of further injury.

You're right of course, I'll start with 5 mins at 2km/h.

The plan with the treadmill is that I can do a bit in the evening after the kids are in bed when I would be browsing/watching TV anyway (I need to work out how to mount the laptop or tablet on the handlebars. 5 mins of walking will more than double my current daily exercise regime.
    I think....

5 mins at 2km/h is 166m. Under normal walking speed that should take you less than 2 minutes. If you are going to do it in 5 minutes you are going less than half normal walking speed.

Speaking of treadmills, I think I found out why my car's fuel consumption has no connection with the printed one. There's apparently small print somewhere that says the test is carried out with neither driver nor passengers and no wind resistance. Explains a lot. :(

Like I said, start by doubling my daily activity and see how it goes from there. I suspect by tomorrow morning my back will have stiffened and I won't be able to move at all which rather confirms what I have always suspected about exercise being bad for you.

Apparently it is not the weight of the driver and passengers in total that makes the difference but specifically the weight of the drivers right foot.....
    I think....

    No wind resistance?
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

My top tip for treadmill exercise is that, when the treadmill is running, the calories burned and distance covered numbers continue to increase whether you are actually on the treadmill or not.

As its an indoor test lab I presume: I wouldn't be surprised if the treadmill was sloping downwards at a steep angle as well.

Ignore the naysayers. Doing exercise is better for your physical and mental health than not doing exercise.

You might want to consider doing some weight bearing exercise too in time.

Speaking of exercise, has anyone used, or have knowledge of, couch to 5k?

    I agree.

It doesn't matter how small the start. Better that way than to overdo things and be put off.
