You need to factor in the health benefits of power walking, though, offset partly by the risks of the particulates she inhales. :)

Lowest risk option seems to be power walking along a footpath or side street (if you can find one). I heard an interesting radio documentary about particulate levels a year or two ago - apparently levels fall off quite dramatically over even a short distance as you get further away from the main roads. Of course the risk of being run over decreases in the same way for the same reason.
Do you know anyone who's bereaved? Point them to https://www.AtaLoss.org which does for bereavement support what MSE does for financial services, providing links to support organisations relevant to the circumstances of the loss & the local area. (Link permitted by forum team)
Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.
    :)

Some research was done on cyclists in London a while back. The health benefits outweigh the risk of being run down by a considerable measure.

I get exercise on my commute by being late for the train and having to run all the way from my house to the station every single morning without fail.

Just been to see the James Bond film. Far too violent for my liking.

I usually end up doing it at Istanbul between home and Georgia, because the flight out of Stansted never seems to be on time when I'm on it.

If I end up getting the train in (usually because I'm working off site) then I'll refuse without exception to get one of the peak ones, or the first off peak. This has the added benefit of meaning I can roll out of bed about 8am (which is a huge luxury), pop into town for some breakfast and be back at the station for 9:30.

My days of 4am starts are really hectic, but the walk is still no further from bed to the car (via the bathroom), then from the office car park to the front door (a walk of no more than 20m)

There's a path down the side of The Thames. It's great for cycling.
