Prices in our area seem to be climbing but not much here matches the prices in those two villages. Some of the other Surrey-based NPs may be in more up-and-coming parts of the county.

We've peaked anyway in terms of housing. Inconceivable we could get anything bigger or better what with DW being retired and me being about a decade away from it.

Moving to France would be a bit much for me. I recommend the chunk of the country between, say, Weston-super-mare and Birmingham as being a lot cheaper than London, nowhere near as grim as the north, much less isolated than the far south west, and more convenient than anything on the other side of the channel, not only for the language but for those of us with an aging parent or two in this country. (I'm going to go and see mine later this week.)
A much older friend of mine started a second family when he was 60. He very seriously considered moving to Paris on retirement, simply because they look after families better there and he figured his (much younger) wife and child would get a better quality of life when he passed on.

My dad is still living in the house that he and my mum bought in 1959. He's contemplating moving to a sheltered flat in the same city, but I don't think he'd consider moving further afield. He always used to be somebody who loved travel, but he liked to have a fixed home to come back to afterwards.

My youngest brother, his SAHM wife and their son love the lifestyle they get living near Toulouse, though. Their original plan was to move back to this country once my nephew was secondary school age (not for a few years yet) but he's doing well in an international school, and I suspect they may decide to stay longer.

Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.

I would say the area you describe is rather nice but i would say that living in it wouldn't i?

Its funny because our neighbour is selling and moving to France, they have agreed to buy a place and want to sell here. I pegged their house at 240-250k when we moved in May 2014 and maybe £265-275k now and its on for £305k! which seems like madness to me.

When I first stumbled across this thread about four years ago, I initially thought there was a geographical focus based posters living on a triangle from Herts to the West Midlands to the West Country

That's before I realised the northern tip was Aberdeen and the southern tip was Australia.

If my house were worth £1million I'd not go to France to live. How on earth would I ever choose somewhere and live in a furren land, with furreners and furren languages ...and furren forms/regulations.....

    Not for me!

I like to understand the area round where I live!

One of our former forum members had the pleasure of being a private tenancy housing officer in Slough for a time. I believe she survived due the fact she refused to live there herself.

I could agree with that :)

My washing machine is making a noise when it spins. Is that a cheap fix or should I buy a new one?

Depends how new it is. The bearings might be gone which can be very pricy to fix. But it may also be a bra underwire got caught and may be sticking into the drum (and be retrievable).

If you've an extended warranty it might be worth repairing. If its the bearings they might have to replace the whole drum which could cost a substantial fraction of the price of the machine and you might be better putting the money into a new one.
