I had my retirement presentation at work today. A gentle tea party where I was showered with kind words, generous gifts, and flowers.

I had not prepared a script for the few words I would need to say by way of response, however made a coherent reply.

Physically I found it harder than anticipated and developed an uncontrollable shaking and had to sit rather than stand. I was almost on the verge of cracking emotionally, no tears but a very trembley bottom lip and jaw that took on a life of it's own. Not a good Look.

It is a bit like hearing your own eulogy or reading lots of favourable obituaries about your achievemenst and high moral and ethical standards, skills, ready wit, and empathy.

Except you have not had the downside of dying.

My daughter came with me, and the greatest accolade was her telling me that she wanted to be like me as we travelled home.

It all made me feel like a Nice Person.

That sounds wonderful. A real expression of how they think of you and the lasting impact you will have on all the people that worked for and with you. One of the good things about being a manager is that you can leave a lasting mark on the people that worked for you. Obviously that can be a bad thing too!

In Investment Banking in particular they tend to get you out of the door as quickly as they can.

One bloke I worked with was let go after 25 years having worked his way up from the post room to one level below head of FX. He had a terrible year so they fired him. The first he knew about it was that his pass didn't work when he came back from getting lunch.

I let him onto the trading floor and there were two big blokes in bad suits by his desk holding a black sack full of his things. The Boss said, "You have 1 minute to say goodbye, don't try to touch your computer".

He just said, "See you in the Jam Pot" and that was that.

I was later told that they were being nice to him by letting him upstairs rather than grabbing him in the lobby.

That's really sad Gen. Glad I don't work in an environment like that.

Is the Jam Pot the name of a pub or another way of saying see you in court? Bit confused and daren't use the urban dictionary for that one.

TBH once you're used to it it's okay, at least the hire and fire bit. If you have an ounce of humility you realise you're earning well beyond what you could reasonably expect and they just want you away from their customers really.

The Jam Pot is the nickname for The Jamaica Inn just near the BoE.

Try working in a contact (call) centre for an environment.

    People boil down to statistics.

There are discussions and arguments as to how many seconds people have between calls to ready themselves for the next call. 5 seconds sounds nothing but it is spoken about as big money.

Everything is known in terms of numbers. How many rest breaks; reasons for call drops; abusive responses, the lot.

Genuinely, I do feel for those on the front line. Many of them are unlikely to see the job through to any kind of retirement too. They tend to get fed up and leave.

As michaels says, very much sorted!

Have a long way to go before I retire. It seems to be just like taking a close-up photo of the horizon, retreating the closer I get.
