Gun politics in Switzerland are unique in Europe. The vast majority of men between the ages of 20 and 30 are conscripted into the militia and undergo military training, including weapons training. The personal weapons of the militia are kept at home as part of the military obligations. However, it is generally not permitted to keep army-issued ammunition, but compatible ammunition purchased for privately owned guns is permitted. At the end of military service period the previously used gun can be converted to a privately owned gun after a weapon acquisition permit has been granted (fully automatic weapons will be rebuilt into semi-automatic ones). Switzerland thus has one of the highest gun ownership rates in the world.[1]

Half-a-million British motorists are flashed by speed cameras in France each year. French police do not currently try to collect fines, although they do impose on-the-spot penalties if they stop British motorists who are speeding.
It difficult for them to track down those caught on camera because Britain opted out of a 2011 EU directive on road safety.
A new directive that was unanimously approved in February will come into force in most EU countries later this year. Britain - along with Ireland and Denmark, which also opted out of the earlier directive - will have until May 2017 to enforce it.

Why in heavens name would you opt out of a safety scheme. Perhaps Mr Cameren showing how tough on Europe he could be?

So speed cameras are about safety not raising revenue...

...and you are happy that every govt in the EU can be trusted to handle your personal data without it being hacked or sold on by unscrupulous employees?

Holidays? I took a bunch of home finances stuff with me to do, didn't get round to any of it and am now doing the 'must dos' before back to work tomorrow (and no doubt the post holiday email deluge, luckily I am not able to look until I am at my desk, advantages of being a contractor, you are not trusted with a laptop, crackberry or remote access). Sometimes it just seems like it would be less hassle not to go away at all.

House is even more upside down than normal, we had the main room decorated before we went away, moved most of the furniture back in today but have started also moving the stuff from the junk (aka dining) room into the main room where appropriate and that room now looks like a bomb blast would make it more not less tidy, it is not a matter of finding a path across the floor but choosing the least breakable looking, most stable bits to stand on....

I had my retirement presentation at work today. A gentle tea party where I was showered with kind words, generous gifts, and flowers.

I had not prepared a script for the few words I would need to say by way of response, however made a coherent reply.

Physically I found it harder than anticipated and developed an uncontrollable shaking and had to sit rather than stand. I was almost on the verge of cracking emotionally, no tears but a very trembley bottom lip and jaw that took on a life of it's own. Not a good Look.

It is a bit like hearing your own eulogy or reading lots of favourable obituaries about your achievemenst and high moral and ethical standards, skills, ready wit, and empathy.

Except you have not had the downside of dying.

My daughter came with me, and the greatest accolade was her telling me that she wanted to be like me as we travelled home.

It all made me feel like a Nice Person.

You, my dear are a truly nice Nice Person. Happy official retirement :) I'm sure your contribution to the workplace is missed, but some things (e.g. you) are more important.

I can sympathise with all of this.

The mess is subsiding from the wall going up, but I still can't decide on a colour to decorate it.

I'm trying to work and organise school uniforms. And choose paint :o

Crikey Spirit, that sounds like a hard, but lovely day. Shows how loved and respected you are there, as well as at home from DD's response. And you are a very nice person.
