Medicines in the 1960s were very nasty - except one. I can still remember it, but don't know what it was. It was a red syrupy liquid and tasted lovely!

No, this was something from the Doctor, an NHS prescription item. Was Benylin even invented back then??

I can watch open heart surgery etc but the talk of people swallowing tablets has me retching like a good un! Never known why, just that I can't watch, think or talk about it without it making me feel ill (and sometimes actually making me ill).

Re uniform, didn't have one at primary school but had to have one for high school. I remember my parents with the list and suggested places to get the items and buying one for when I started, the only exception was the cardigan, mum knitted that.

I was so unimpressed with their rather staid choices which did absolutely nothing for my figure that from then on, I purchased and modified my uniform, no way was I going to let my mum loose on what she thought was 'modern' and then having to live with the taunting for the next year (did I ever tell you I was a willful and nightmare child/teen :rotfl:).

I was always just about inside the rules (despite the teachers trying their hardest to prove otherwise) but was most certainly an individual rather than part of a collective.

Back then, I would purchase clothes (not just for uniform) and embellish/redesign etc to follow latest fashion but on a budget....and all via hand sewing - hundreds of tiny tiny almost invisible stitches, me and sewing machines never got on.

Can't even hold a sewing needle these days, let alone adapt clothing.
We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.
Eldests' EDS diagnosis 4.5.10, mine 13.1.11 eekk - now having fun and games as a wheelchair user.

DD1 seems to be very fashion conscious, the school is very uniform strict, will be interesting to see what happens when the irresistible force meets the immovable object...:D
    I think....

Are you in Romania CK? I was talking to one of my colleagues yesterday about how beautiful and underrated Buchares t is (I've not been, he has).

The conversation also covered how easy it was to communicate there, a because Romanian is a romance language and b because most learn English at school.

Romanian is very much like Italian, but different. I'm trying to learn myself at the moment and it's a lot easier than I'd first thought.

Bucharest is lovely. Bit of trivia is that the parliament building is the heaviest building in the world.

If you have access to a car in Romania, giving Caecescu's racetrack a try is really fun (it featured on Top Gear some years ago).

Constanta is really lovely too, and is now served from Luton on a Friday and Monday, so is where quite a few weekends will be spent, I think. Mamaia in the summer (I did it last year) is absolutely essential.

I lived in Serbia for a short time, and Baile Herculane is not only close to where I was living, but also possibly one of the most beautiful places I've ever been to.

Basically, as much as Romania had bad press in the UK, it's an absolutely amazing country, and somewhere I'd recommend visiting.

DD1 went to a prep school where the uniform was sold only in the village haberdasher/oufitters or Harrods. Included a boater for summer, looked cute and very proper.
    Winter uniform was kilt.
Had the most durable winter coat which as tradition dictates was huge on her when new. lasted her from aged 4 to 8, after which she had a new one, which she had not grown out of when she left at 11.
Her senior school was a lot less strict and in year 11 they wore black skirt suits and white blouses of any design. So varying skirt lengths.
All girls but no less fashion concious.

DD was always a conformist so no uniform drama's ever.

A feature of my school uniform was uniform knickers. Brown, warm,
Thickcotton . WWe had a Uniform check every week in our tutor groups the boys faced out wards and the girls were required to raise their skirts at the hip to show they were wearing regulation knickers. My Form tutor was the male physics teacher who I think thought this odd so skipped this check. when he was absent the teacher covering would report a number of girls for incorrect dress.

My recollection is that taking tablets was traumatic when I was a child. These were always adult sized tablets that would not fit down a child sized throat. Crushing them up and having them with jam was sometimes okay, but some medicines are just ghastly. Liquid medicine, like calpol, can be okay.

children's soluble asprin tasted orangey and i liked those.

I've mentioned before that an ambition of mine is to visit 100 countries before I die. I need to get my skates on mind as I'm just under 50 at the moment (number of countries not age).

Romania has made it on to my "to do" list. Serbia, not so much yet, though there are other FYR states that are on it. I did however read Asne Seierstad's book on Serbia, which was absolutely fascinating.
