You remember I wanted a miniature zebra? I just bought myself one. As close as I can get until Hamish delivers the real thing.

Yorkie, sorry to hear your mum is reporting changes in your dad's cognitive status. Has he had any physical illness in the last couple of years or is he taking any medication that has confusion as a side effect? I ask because i know I come across as slower reacting, forgetful and a bit muddled now, and have only ventured out alone in places where i am well recognised and there are lots of people about.
In my case it is not dementia just brain injury and post illness recovery time.
Thanks Spirit and all.
She got Dad to the GP this morning. He's been referred to a neurologist; appointment likely to take 2-4 weeks. The GP's first thought is that it might not be dementia but that he might have had a stroke - though there's no typical physical symptoms.
He's been on blood pressure / cholesterol tablets for years. He's had a couple of fainting type episodes after long tiring journeys in the last year - the GP ruled out TIA at that point, and thought it was probably stress related, but who knows.
There's definite problems with processing words and speech, but his general behaviour is also very uncharacteristic and a couple of times disinhibited. Yesterday he just sat in the car for over 2 hours, watching the world go by. Today he insisted on trying to park the car on the drive (the GP has said he can't drive for now). Perhaps trying to achieve at least one thing successfully.
He's also in a lot of pain from his back. I guess that could be tension as much as anything.
He's looking a lot thinner suddenly and not drinking many of the drinks she's making him. I know that dehydration can aggravate things.
It's just difficult to know what to do from a distance and how to support Mum.0 -
