Forgot to say earlier, after spending the weekend working on a presentation, I'm now playing the waiting game...It's getting harder & harder to keep the government in the manner to which they have become accustomed.0

As we don't normally get tax credits we use the salary sacrifice via child care vouchers route rather than the child care tax credit route. This is being phased out for new applicants later this year but again will be grandfathered for those already in receipt so it might be worth you looking into doing it this way too?
Thanks for the suggestion but there's no point in salary sacrificing for childcare for me. The CTC/WTC option has been a better deal for me up until now, and this term is the last term I shall ever be paying anything for childcare at all.If school is over 3 miles and is the nearest suitable school that accepted her, you should be getting a free bus pass.
It isn't, I'm afraid. The nearest suitable school that would have given her a place is DS's school - an excellent school within walking distance (DS walks there). DD wanted to go to a different school a few miles away, which is also an excellent school, and I agreed that although DS's school is the best fit available school for him, this other school would better suit her. So we have to pay for the bus ourselves.lemonjelly wrote: »Ridiculously over simplified, employed people claiming UC are protected, so if their UC is lower than their WTC etc, they will be transitionally protected.
That said, a lone parent who is employed will be better off under UC in the vast majority of cases.
I'm sure most lone parents would be. However, a widowed parent like me who has claimed lots of cash in (a) life insurance, (b) late spouse's pension death in service payment, and (c) compensation for the accident that killed him, has too much capital to qualify for any benefits that means test capital instead of just income, as UC is going to do.I think the alignment of savings qualifications with other benefits like housing benefit / council tax benefit (tapering from 16k down to 5k) will make people like me and Lydia ineligible whereas under the current system benefits are ignored. But as you say there is traditional relief but I assume that where this applies amounts will be frozen in cash terms until UC catches up so gradual errosion by inflation.
It is not clear to me whether I would get any transitional protection, or how much, or for how long, since there is no possibility of my UC entitlement ever catching up with my CTC/WTC entitlement, since I will never qualify for UC, being over the savings limit by, err, a lot. I'm not even sure that I would attempt to claim the transitional relief. It's odd. I feel OK about continuing claiming WTC/CTC as I have been for years, mostly before I got my compensation etc last summer. But claiming transitional UC when I clearly don't qualify and can clearly manage without it would feel like cheating the system. I know that's not rational to distinguish between the two like that. Sorry. I am not a perfectly rational person. Few people are, if any.Do you know anyone who's bereaved? Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.0 -
Thanks Lydia - do I just contact them and mention you or do you need to contact them first?
I have contacted them and given them my name and yours (I hope I got your surname right). They say that if you now contact them and tell them you have been referred by me (with my RL name) then they should be able to connect the dots at their end. Thanks v much.

I've lifted/dropped the frame to try it out - and it's not heavy at all and just works a treat.
The only disappointment I have is that the mattress fits 'inside' the bedframe, so the brown/exterior design/frame is exposed for 1" all round. I can see me having nasty accidents on that over time. I like a mattress to sit 100% flush with the bed base, even overlapping it by 1/2" to be sure.
Our mattress expanded for about 48 hours so hopefully this will be less of a problem than it looks now.I think....0 -
PN, it was the same with my dad last April, but in the end after a lot of discussion my parents' very expensive nursing home did agree to take him back....just meant they had to employ additional agency staff in order to provide him with a 24/7 one-to-one carer......
However, he was assessed for NHS Continuing Care before being discharged from hospital and did qualify.
Has this been done in your case? If not, I believe it should have.....Mortgage-free for fourteen years!
