How much does getting things valued cost? Is it 'worth' it for such low value items to be insured properly?

    generally about 1-2% of value.

You need to check your insurance t&Cs. A lot have a max per item that could be as low as £250 or could be as much as £1000. There will also be a limit on valuables that could be expressed as a percentage of your total insured value or could be a fixed amount.

Once you enter the territory of having to name individual items you move away from being able to get cheap quotes online, so you have to decide if the extra cost of the policy each year justifies the extra insurance.

At the very least take photos of you wearing the items (as proof you own them rather than have searched online for pictures).

You only need to get things valued if the insurer asks for it, or you are very unsure.

For insurance I think it's 10% of value. It's cheaper for probate.

We're insured with John Lewis at the mo, I think the rule with them is if less than £x000 tis covered. But it depends on which policy. We went for a higher cost one so my jewelry covered, none of it is worth over the amount, can't remember what the amount is, might be 2 grand? I think that's for individual pieces, rather than a collection.

If nobody else is better able to help I'll get OH to dig out the details. A lot depends on the small print in your insurance - there will be all kinds of stuff they won't cover. And some won't include jewelry in household stuff I think, or have limitations. Plus if you are underinsured and get burgled they won't pay you full whack but only a percentage. We got caught out that way when we were done at old home just after we bought a super duper state of the art Panasonic HD TV. :( But they did pay out on costume jewelry I had that was surprisingly worth more than I realised... But still with the percentage knocked off of course.

And this is the company OH used to work for, and I have shares in too. Grrr. Oh well, lets hope it enables them to keep paying OH his pension! :rotfl:

Edit: cross posted with SilverCar who prob knows more than me. Esp about costs for valuations!

Do you think we will get done for treason and lose our heads?

Probably not. The Crown Estates was given up by the Royal Family decades ago and the money goes into the general taxation pool not to HMQ.

Objecting to paying this tax is just like saying to the Queen that you think tax on cigarettes is too high. As Head of State she is ultimately responsible for the level of tax on cigarettes but realistically she just signs off the decision.

At that sort of price point do I need to get them valued or is photo and adding to my own inventory sufficient?

    Depends on your policy.

We have a capped amount for total contents and anything under £2500 per item can just be listed and photographed, but any individual item worth more than £2500 has to be notified to the insurer and photographed, receipted or valued, so our various watches, some of Mrs McT's clothes, bags, jewellery, some art and memorabilia items, etc.

Call your insurer and ask, I suspect photos and listing them will be enough for a grand or less, as a handy hint we email photos of valuations and high value items to each others hotmail, icloud or gmail accounts so if the place burns down we always have a copy stored offsite.

Our friendly jeweller will provide a written valuation for insurance purposes free with any work, including basic cleaning, rhodium plating for white gold, watch band repairs, etc, done to an item. I don't think he's ever charged me more than £25 for any service, cleaning, or repair work, so it's really good value.

Actually, come to think about it, he sourced a diamond/sapphire tennis bracelet for me recently to match a necklace I gave her a decade ago, and he valued both items for free as I'd lost the original valuation, so I guess if you ever buy anything or get anything fixed at a jewellers it's probably worth haggling to get some free valuations thrown in.

    Congrats Maggie!

Lir - coincidence that you posted your lovely pic of your herb troughs today.... There was a programme on BBC1 this morning, sounded a little like Mary Berry (I had my eyes closed :o), and at one point they were talking about herbs - in particular less common ones (miners lettuce, yarrow and perhaps a couple of others). I'll see if I can work out what it was (assuming I wasn't hallucinating) and post you a link in case you're interested.

It was great, and as I told her when I text to say I'd got home, doing something spontaneous always makes me feel better about life :)
Good job we went home when we did... I had to keep on the hoodie I'd left the house wearing instead of a coat, because I was still wearing the old t-shirt I hang about the house in :o That'll teach me not to get properly dressed before leaving the house!

Not according to the treason act 1351:

"Adhering to the King's enemies" appears from the small print to mean joining or helping people who are fighting a war against the monarch or the country, so I don't think you qualify. ;)

Sorry to hear what's happened though. :(

Hmm - no wonder they had to bump of Dodi AlFayed,,,,
    I think....

It was Mary Berry talking to Jekka of Jekka's herb farm.

So you weren't hallucinating Nikkster! :)
