Have just found this thread, they have extended end date to May 2008 and have printed on website, that answer is NOT Fluorsecent Park (as originally thought by MSE'rs) - and that they are still awaiting first correct answer!

    ...anybody read the book?

Wow, I forgot all about this thread! Do you think they deliberately changed it from Fluorescent Park (cynical old me!) as they had so many entries from here or it really is something that no one can find?! Seems daft.

If I can find the book I'll read it (but could take me a while!) Although, I'll try and find it in a bookshop I doubt it will be there so might have to order from the net.
Good luck to those who read it!
Thank you to everyone who posts comps! :A

  • I reckon they've changed the answer - like Mandles' post i could be anything now. They prob had an overwhelming amount of correct answers. Its a bit weird how they've changed the end date of the comp and have rung/emailed people.

Meh. I have no intention of reading the book, so i'm not going to enter :p:p:p:p:p
  • i was just reaDING THE competition and it said that the answer is not
Fluorescent Park. so i dont know what the answer is

I've not read the book (although I'll try and get hold of it next time I go to the library because this comp is bothering me now!) but if you think about it, the clue is "A safe haven that’s not quite neon" so wouldn't the 'not quite neon' bit be pointing you away from 'fluorescent' anyway?
Wins: Jan-Sept:£1991.27, Nov: "The Rough Guide to the iPhone" book, "FWD this link" book ... £12.98
Win £2008 in 2008 number 60, only £3.75 to go! (it is highly likely I'll win absolutely nothing else now this year! ;))

No - it should be pointing you towards it.

"The idea behind a neon light is simple. Inside the glass tube there is a gas like neon, argon or krypton at low pressure. At both ends of the tube there are metal electrodes. When you apply a high voltage to the electrodes, the neon gas ionizes, and electrons flow through the gas. These electrons excite the neon atoms and cause them to emit light that we can see. Neon emits red light when energized in this way. Other gases emit other colors. A fluorescent light works on a similar idea but it has an extra step. :D Inside a fluorescent light is low-pressure mercury vapor. When ionized, mercury vapor emits ultraviolet light"

Yeah, I know that scientifically neon and fluorescent are different, but I was wondering whether they'd actually be thinking on that level or whether it's just a vague hint... there is a possibility I may be overthinking this! ;)

"Not Quite" = "Similar Idea" ;)

The only suggestion I can think of is that they are asking just for "Fluorescent" and not "Fluorescent Park"
