Honestly. When I think about how hard some people work. I've got a mate who works full-time and does a part-time job in the evenings so she can give her kids the things she wants for them. Both hard, physical jobs. I've never heard her complain. She just gets on with it. Then I come on here and see people moaning about not being able to support themselves when they work 21 hours a week because working a second job isn't practical.

Better to be a bit worse off with your 21 hours that to be carried on the backs of people who don't have the luxury of being 'practical'.

    How's that?

He hasn't stated his age, if he has children or any disabilities. If he is over 25 he doesn't work enough hours to qualify. He would have to work the minimum of 30.

Ah! I thought it was just 16 hrs you had to work to get WTC. My error.

work offers a lot more than pay, including potential

Although to compare being worse off when only working 21 hours a week doesn't get a lot of sympathy unfortunately. There is plenty of work out there nowadays to top up to a FT role if required

It is an assumption that I have to consider. I will not get any housing benefit, and the LHA rate is limited, as they've just informed me this week that I won't be qualifying for it.
So what's the calculation? In work and out?

You can't be worse off in work through loss of JSA/LHA/HB. LHA/HB is tapered at 65%, not 100%+, not cliff edge.

You can be worse off in work due to high travel to work costs or if you get SMI (that is cliff-edge)

Have you checked the figures on turn2us?

Let's say you get to the first month and you come to pay your rent. Actually, you don't have enough money to pay the landlord. The next month you're still in the same position except now you receive an eviction notice. Well done.
  • Martyn, please try and remember a lot of posters have no idea what it is like to live on NWM as, dare I say nor do we of their world

I turned to a short term loan more then once, borrowing only what JSA would have given me, happily proving the critics wrong, it's been tough, I've given up things I love and taken stuff back to the shop when getting home to realise I couldn't afford it, to then read how easy it is to quote irresponsible lending, nothing maddens me more

This isn't coming out how I'd like y'know, but hopefully one day our luck will turn x

PS. don't mess with the rent whilst you can household bills far easier for a couple of months grace xx

I don't know what you're complaining about, be thankful you have a job, many still do not. Either work more than 21 hours are find a job with longer hours are work two jobs and stop being a moaning git and just sound lazy!

You say its not practical to work two jobs and why is that? My dad works 2 jobs, full time Monday to friday from 10AM to 7PM and works nights friday, saturday & sunday 9PM to 7AM and on Monday goes to his full time job with NO sleep.

Babydoll, your dad is actually breaking the Law and could land one or both of his employers in the mire. You are supposed to have a minimum of 9 hours break between shifts. This is for the safety of the worker and his colleagues.

Martynb_ , I work 32 hours a week which is not enough to live on and pay my bills. However, having spoken to both HMRC and my local Council, I know that I will get WTC and may well also be eligable for some Council Tax Benefits as well.
