hello all so pleased to meet you all :D

Molly41 does Squeakys eye look like this
    http://personal.inet.fi/cool/djfunk/marsula/pics/fatty_eye02.jpg
if it does then its a common complaint in piggys and its called fatty eye does not cause them any problems and there is nothing that will cure it, or make it go away, and the piggy does not need its eye removed. It does not hurt all harm the piggy in any way and they can still see. (do hope it is this and Squeaky will be ok)

hi Difred is it a vibrate or a purr? piggys purr when they are very happy (like a cat) how to sex a piggy I do hope this does not get chucked off ;) right just above there privates gently with your finger /thumb push if a little girl (sow) then you will feel a solid bone , this is the pelvis bone , if its a boy (boar) then he will not have a soild bone and he will pop out. This is the easyest way of working out your piggys sex :)

JtA I am so sorry to hear of your loss :( pumonia (s?) is a awfull illness and sadley piggys do get it, I have known some piggys to make it, and I have also known piggys with all the nurseing in the world not to make it :( I am not trying to but in with you vets advice but piggys miss having there kind with them, and sows bond so quickly with there own kind, if you do notice that Candy seems very quiet and withdrawn or starts to not eat then I would get her a friend sooner rather than later. I do hope you dont think I am butting in, and I am thinking of Candy and wish her well, please let us know how she does.

    hi Sirbendy :)

Molly41 please let us know how Squeak gets on , thinking of you

Witchwoopiggy, we'll see how she gets on next week, then in July think about getting her a wee female friend (i've read adult sow's tend to accept younger sow's quite easily).

If you want a little nosy at "their" :D bebopage ...http://www.bebo.com/Profile.jsp?MemberId=8782900383

    Hi witchwoopiggy,
No it doesn't look like that. Its more like a cataract but then its also red and inflammed in the eyeball. If I shine a light on it you can see its red in there. Sorry Im not very techical. Ohhhh dear I so dont want to lose her. She is my longest surviving guinea pig and has lost two partners. Poor Rosie died at christmas - couldn;t find a reason she just died eating her hay! Squeaky is so happy with Ollie and he is a great pig - really butch (but obviously neutered) Lots of purring and good sounds!

Thankyou for your advice and support. I will let you know how she gets on.
    Love Plopsky
I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer.
Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.
I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over and through me. When it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path.
When the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.

    Hi again....
We just back from the vets and its ok...for now anyway. The vet thinks its a leaky cataract? the serous fluid is seeping out and causing inflammation. No infection. She is in very good shape, has even put on a bit of weight. Ive got some more drops for her. so no nasty decisions to be made right now! She has no sight in that eye but she manages just fine so we happy and she was sooo happy to be back in her run with Ollie.
Please keep in touch. Its good to talk to likeminded guinny piggy fans.

We had 2 guinea pigs when my children were little - Gary and Gordon.

In fact we had 6 over the years, but when one died, the remaining one would be so lonely that we would immediate replace it with another Gary or Gordon. We were always a bit concerned that being males, the older one would attack the smaller, younger one, but my FIL who is a GP show judge all over Europe (so sad), always said to spray perfume over both pigs and it would confuse them. Whether this was true or not I don't know, but we never had any problems with them at all.

I was sorry when they both finally went but the children lost interest as they got older and I found that they weren't so friendly once they weren't being handled every day. The one thing I don't miss is the noise they used to make - how can something that small make such a racket!!!!

(FIL still breeds them - I would guess he has around 40-50 at any one time so can you image the noise coming from his shed!!) :rotfl::rotfl:

Hi there, it's really upsetting when you are worried about your pets. I have kept piggies on and off since i was a child.I worked voluntarily at a guinea pig hospital calle the Cambridge Cavy Trust which is based near huntingdon. The lady who founded and runs it is called Vedra and i have never met anyone quite like her to be honest. Vets aren't always very knowledgeable on rodents.I would definately give her a call for some advice.

    Heres the number 07721 026401.

If you google cambridge cavy trust you should find some info although they don't have a direct website as she just doesn't have the time between syringe feeding poorly piggies!
  • JtA they look lovely :) and yes sows accept other sows very easy , I have bonded older sows with babys no trouble , they tend to mother them, but older sows will also accept an old sow as well :) its boars that can be a pain some times :)

Molly41 I have lost 3 piggys like that very quick it does come as a real shock :( So pleased Squeaky is doing well :) I had a piggy that was blind in both eyes and he done very well :) he was born like it, he was what is called a leathal. Piggys eyesite is not the best in the world normaly so loseing there site does not bother them as much as it would more site dependent animals.:)

Simbacat yes they do make a racket :D you should hear my lot at breakfast time :rotfl:

I always have the dilemma of "do I feed the cats, while the pigs go mad..or do I feed the pigs and have the cats sulk"..:rotfl:You can't win.
