  • Awh bless what a cutie!
My piggy wasn't looked after properly before so he currently has sore feet and his teeth are a bit long so he is off to get them clipped in a couple of days poor mite.
    Thanks for that btw =)
  • i think that piggies also need a daily source of vitamin C as like humans, they can't store it...I suspect that it's present in a lot of fruit and veg but i knoww it's particularly high in red peppers. (Bell, not chili!)

turtle, sorry about your pig, he was so handsome :(

Mine used to love dandelion leaves and lettuce, or a bit of celery, but not more than about a quarter of a stick. If I let them out in the garden they used to keep the grass cropped very nicely. I never had to cut the grass while I had guinea pigs.

Thanks. I know you from RR, but I have a diff name on there;). He was a beauty, people used to call him handsome all the time, vets especially.

You're right about the vitamin C - it's usually in the pellets so best to buy a smaller bag as it deteriorates over time.

Op - your piggy will feel much better with his nails clipped I'm sure :cheesy:

    Mine loved baby sweetcorn
  • We feed ours carrot, green beans (their favourite), celery, cucumber, broccoli and curly kale. Sometimes they have babycorn but they went off that for a while. They get romaine lettuce, parsley and basil and corn on the cob (with the leaves left on) as treats. Yes, my two are spoilt!!!!!

I love guinea pigs! Had several as a child, and my sisters still have some. Whatever vegetables you give your guinea pig, I've heard that you need to make sure it's not straight out of the fridge, you need to allow it to warm up to room temperature. Otherwise (or so I hear) they can get stomach upsets from the cold vegetables.
  • he had a strawberry this morning and he had some sort of spasm lol i think it was a bit tart for him.
  • hi,

I bought two ginuea pigs on Saturday (Leo and Augustus) and I am looking for a bit of guidance on a few things. I cant believe how therapeutic they are, just listening them squeaking and playing is literally the best medicine a person can have.

I wondered if it is possible to train them to toilet in a pot of some sort, just to try to keep their cage a little cleaner for them. I changed it literally 30 mins ago and already it looks a state again!

Also I have bought hay which I am using on top of old newspapers and then I am putting some sort of shredded J-cloth stuff into the hideyhole thing (for them to snuggle up!). Is this correct?

I am also wondering how much food I should be giving them? I just keep filling it up each time the bowl is empty. I gave them a tomato on Sunday and I havent given them any treats since.... I feel very mean but I've heard they can eat themselves to death

Also the same with water as I am putting vitamin C powder in the bottle too so wasnt sure whether to change every day/every other day?? Oh and insurance - is it worth it? or should I just put say £3 a week away just in case....

Is there anything else I should know? I did loads of research on them but not much on the day-to-day stuff.

    Thanks for any advice,

    Jen
