hi,
Thanks for all the brillant advice.
Any ideas on toys? Also has anyone managed to successfully put a second shelf level in their cage? The cage I have for them is large but only has one level and I was thinking if I can come up with a shelf which they cant chew etc then I would double theyre space. I have seen mini ladders suitable for guinea pigs on ebay.
These are some pics

Augustus reminds me very much of the little mouse out of ciderella - he is easily spooked and is desperate to get away when I try to hold him (as they both are .... ;( ).

hah, yes. "They don't jump/climb"....mmhmm...
My last pair (and in fact the 2 before that) were housetrained and had the run of the house 24/7....stairs DO NOT present any kind of obstacle to an inquisitive guineapig..0 -
Theres a guinea pig on youtube jumping hurdles (made of books), very funny, but i've been unable to train mine to do this.0

PLEASE don't use straw in your guinea pig cages! The straw isn't absorbant and can get into their eyes and cause irritation.
I don't use the ordinary straw which has quite big strands, I use the straw bedding that has the tiny strands which is very soft (the name of it escapes me at the moment) If you run your fingers through it, it isn't at all harsh or sharp but very silky and soft.0 -
More pictures please! Especially of the piggy that looks like a bogbrush0

I have two lovely guinea pigs, Rosie-almost 2 and petal-about 6 months, indoor piggies but they get a variety of fresh fruit, veggies and pellet food. I noticed about two months ago Rosie had scabs around her body, some looking quite sore and quite dry skin, they seemed to be mainly on her back and legs, took a while to find them all as she is an abysiann (sp?) with plenty of rosettes so looks a tad scruffy anyways!
I couldn't quite work out was was wrong from the net but tried using johnsons medicated/incectide shampoo for small animals and sudocreme on the sore bits, after a week she was on the mend and it cleared up.
It's come back, so it's bathtime for my piggie again, but does anybody know what it could be? I'm guessing it's not contagious as petal is absolutley fine, hasn't put her off her food and seems just as lively, just scabby!:o:hello: Hiya, I'm single mom, avid moneysaver and freecycler, sometimes  but definatly0 -
I would take her straight to the vet. One of our was looking out of condition and we took her to the vet and sadly we were too late as she died the next day. They do not cope well with illness.Taking responsibility one penny at a time!0

Go to the vets asap.It could be mange.“Love yourself first and everything else falls into line. Your really have to love yourself to get anything done in this world.” Lucille Ball.0

Most common skin problems in Guinea Pigs can be either bites from the other GP or, most likely, mites, most common one is Trixicarus caviae OR Chirodiscoides caviae. Both can be treated easily using Ivermectin - either injections weekly from the vet OR Xeno spot on0
