have brought our guinea pig inside cos it's gone colder outside. only cleaned the cage out on sunday afternoon and already it is very smelly. Have sawdust on the floor of the cage, would cat litter or something simlar be better. love him being indoors but it very smelly, he doesnt toilet in any one area, so means whole cage clean out , if i need to clean out often i will do, but wondering if different floor covering will help.Think it's the urine i can smell the most. help needed lol.

  • I wouldnt use cat litter with guinea pigs at all. I dont have guinea pigs anymore but we used to have a litter tray in the corner of the cage, lined with newspaper and with carefresh over the top - marvellous stuff! expensive but as we only used it in the litter tray a bag lasts a long time.
We also used towels and fleece blankets rather than sawdust but I knw most people are horrified by that..worked well for us! make sure you scoop the poos and any wet patches everyday we used an old ladel..(ladle how on earth do you spell that??) to do this, much easier than try to use a pan and brush) and the cage shouldnt smell.

doh just read he doesnt stick to one area - have you tried putting a corner litter tray in? I dont know what kind of cage you have but you can get the guinea pig sized ones? or even a box with an entrance cut out the front?

Saw dust is pretty useless with pigs and cat litter is not very good for them, unless its totally paperbased - but I still wouldn't recommend it

Good stuff to use is carefresh or megazorb. I use megazorb, which comes in huge bags for about £7 from farmway or gwtitmuss, delivery can be a bit expensive but its worth it as its lasts ages and is very absorbant. If you have any horse/feed suppliers near by they normally have it.

Sadly mine go where - ever they fancy which is why the megazorb is so good; i sort of scrape off the top layer daily (number 2's) and scoop out any wet patches and replace with fresh megaz., and do a full clean out about once a week depending on how often they are in their garden mansion (mine are indoor pigs)

Hi will look those up now and see where i can buy it, clark our guninea pig was rehomed from a rescue centre, he just had the full run around in a room with lots of others, may try and see if he would use a toliet tray in his cage, just though maybe he was now a little to old to train. but worth a try, in his outside cage didnt have the same smelly problem, plus he was outside in the run some parts of the day when it was warm. many thanks
