What makes you so sure it was the dog and not the fox?
I'd tread very carefully before approaching your neighbour unless you know for sure it wasn't the fox.

Believed that foxes were nocturnal. Also if a fox had got them I would be surprised if you ever found them. Actually I am surprised that you found them even if it was a Jack Russell. Dogs can trespass unlike cats http://www.defra.gov.uk/wildlife-pets/pets/dangerous/#7 Hugs how awful and poor you having to tell your children. Have you tackled the neighbour about this?

I've had foxes after my chickens at all times of the day. They also might not take the bodies because if they are not hungry they will kill them and come back for them later or it was startled and dropped one.

    Sorry to the OP.
    Nice to save.

I guess whatever killed the poor little things is for another time.
I am sorry that your poor guinea pigs had to die in such a cruel way. Of course you are upset I think we would all feel the same.
    I send you a hug

Jack Russell dogs were bred specifically for hunting and killing rats. There is not a lot of difference between a rat and a guinea pig in the dog's eyes. So if it was him then he was being a good dog and fulfilling the impulse which has been bred into him to kill such small animals. In a hunting situation he'd have been praised and rewarded.

OP please don't be put off getting more guinea pigs - just be aware that they need a physical barrier all around them and above them when they are outside. And have a word with that damn neighbour about letting his dog stray - even if the dog isn't the guilty party it should not be allowed to stray.

So so sorry to hear this, I have three pigs and this is my worst nightmare. Whilst I am work my pigs go in a pen in my parents garden. They have a russel and two lurchers, the lurchers ignore the pigs but the russel is obsessed with them and will sit there all day. I know if she got hold she would kill them aswell, although my dad watches them all the time and the pen is, i hope, very secure but will defo be checking.

Have you mentioned to the neighbours about this?

    Again, I'm so sorry :(

    Really sad thing to happen.

Call the local dog warden and tell them about your neighbours letting the dog stray. We had to do this with a guy that let his dog stray.

That is really sad for you and your family, but I do have to agree that foxes are now around at all time of the day and night, my daughter lost a rabbit that the fox mauled in the middle of the day (she had to have her put down) foxes kill just because they can and often leave the bodies once they have broken the neck.. and please bear in mind that they will come back if they think there are others they can kill...... My daughter now doesn't dare put her bunnies outside unless she can actually sit by them and watch as a fox can bite its way through metal wire to get at the animals.. they need to be inside a wooden structure secure in their cages unless you can actually stand and watch them ..
