Agree with previous poster-do check how the vet puts them to sleep.Little creatures aren't big enough for the injection to be done painlessly- vets will anesthetise them first. When our little ferret died of kidney failure the emergency vet I took him to said she wouldn't do the injection without an anesthetic first.

It is a very hard decision- all the best

Have you tried calling the Cambridge Cavy Trust?they are a charity based near huntingdon but will often help over the phone. the lady who runs it is called Vedra and is simply amazing with what she has done with the piggies (rats, hamsters, chinchillas etc) in her care. I'll try and find the phone number.because she specialised in rodents she has seen all wealth of illness etc and has lots of experience. I hope that helps.

I just got two new girls and introduced them to my existing girl and it was absolutely fine. They all seemed very relaxed about it and are getting on well.

    Hello!

After my piggy girl had three bouncing baby boys ( a surprise to us all) and I bought two girls to keep her company I have gone and bought a shed to keep them all in and now I need a bit of advice as to how to set it up successfully.

We are planning on dividing the shed down the middle so there are girls on one side and boys on the other, at the moment they are in close proximity and it hasn't caused any issues. The shed has a window to allow light and I was going to add a couple of air vents for the summer.

Their current run will be attached to the shed so they can come in and out when we are in the garden. We thought a rubber or vinyl floor would protect the wood and help with insulation. What other form of insulation should we use if any? In the short term we are going to use those clip on battery operated lights with a view to adding a power supply at a later date.

I am so excited about this and I want to take my time and make sure it is perfect for them and warm enough before we move them outdoors so all pieces of advice welcome!

all sounds very exciting!my only worry would be that if boys can smell/ see the girls they do sometimes fight over them.i had this with my two, they were fine at home but had a short stay at a vets where they were near girls and ka-pow (in the words of batman!) no more brotherly love!

Prob not the case all the time but just thoguht i@d mention it!

Guinea Pigs are essentially group animals, very sociable and gregarious. Introducing a new pig to a group is usually straightforward - just avoid too many entire males.

Thanks for the replies, I am very tempted to try it. They certainly seem to appreciate each other's company :)

It might be worth getting the boys neutered so that they can all live together and no need to divide the shed.

oh yes..:) We have 2 based in a hutch in the kitchen (top floor flat). They can see right the way through it pretty much - talk about a racket when I get home and open the door! :)

They spend a lot of time trying to eat the cats - who really just don't seem to care. Heh.
