Hiya I have treid what you have suggested and the minute I tried to download it restarted again!!
Any ideas??0 -
When you said you have tried all the usual things I assume you meant anti virus etc.
Can you download onto another machine and load it onto the affected computer?0 -
what method of downloading are you using, a usb modem?
do you have any antivirus or antispyware software installed?
if you can boot it up, then I suggest you backup anything important to CD/DVD/USB key, just in case, then work on the problem
start, run, eventvwr may give some clues, unless it is malware related.Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0 -
Just a suggestion but if you want to check if there is malware on your PC, you should really seek the advice of experts on specialist sites like bleepingcomputer, castlecops, spywarewarrior - there are many of them. Each has a forum where you can post a 'HijackThis' log, and then their experts look over your log and come back to you with advice. You have to register, but it is free. It might well be that your log is clean, but even so, if you describe your problem there, they may offer other advice.
By the way, you can download HiJackThis from several sites (google it) but the main one is here

Best of luck

i've had my Pc since september, and it had been running like a charm.. dont know whats gone wrong the past three days, but i want to get to the bottom of it before it drives me loopy.
when i start my pc, it loads fine. i have managed to surf the web for 5-15minutes, and then the pc will restart without warning. often, half way through the restart, it will restart itself again  it eventually brings up the 'do you want me to launch in safe mode' screen. so it launches in safe mode, restarts itself once again and then decides to work  i have now *touchwood* been using the pc for about 30 minutes.
this is the third day in a row i have had to go through this. something is clearly amiss. but what?
im guessing the first place to start is run run my antivirus thing, and to make sure that no wires have come loose? nothing has been downloaded or installed recently that could have caused this, AFAIK.
help please

I personally had an unbelevable string of problems with my PC at the start of the new year and spontaneous restarting was one of them, eventually convinced the manufacturer it was duff memory (it was still under warranty) and the PC now works like a dream. You could try running a free program called MemTest which'll test your RAM for you. Hope it all gets sorted for you.

Yep - Same here. PC suddenly just started resetting itself as if the power had been shut off briefly. Dowloaded the program Memtest86+ It's an .ISO file that creates a boot CD, which runs the program immediately ( Assuming you can set your BIOS to boot from a CD ).
It showed my memory was failing big time. I had my memory set up to run in Dual DDR mode and when I changed this back to normal it ran all clear. Not had a problem since doing this.
Follow the advice given by "ben500" to get the BSOD ( Blue Screen Of Death ) with a Stop Error on it - otherwise the machine will continue to simply reset without giving you an error message.
eldoxy24 - this may be a problem for you if you cannot download anything. However, it doesn't sound like a memory problem - why only restart when trying to download ?? I would try and download a good virus scanner and/or Malware remover to another machine and run it on the problem one.
Good luck

I had a similar problem with my computer a few months back, and the way I solved it is probably not what you want to hear...
It was doing all the restarting stuff, and I swapped out the memory, cleared the vents, swapped the power supply, removed the processor and reapplied the thermal grease and did all the usual gubbins with no effect...
In a last ditch attempt I formatted and reinstalled and since then it's been stable as anything...
My tip to the world: If you know how to do it, partition your hard drive in two with a 50 gig section for programmes, and everything else (pictures, documents etc.) on the other partition. That way, if your Operating System screws up (like mine did) you can format and reinstall without losing anything.
Even better, invest in a second hard disk to keep all documents completely seperate from the operating system.
Good Luck.

if ur pc is fully restarting without a BSOD or any warning the chances of it being a software issue is very very small. sounds like another issue.
can i just clear something up please.
the pc will run fine not a problem. but the second you try and download something it restarts?
but if u dont download it will stay on?0
