Why Are Young People Encouraged NOT to Label Anyone?
Comments
-
Cis and trans are standard antonyms, widely used.0
-
trans- is pretty ubiquitous.
cis-? can't think of many words that start with that.
cistern..
Are you objecting to its use? I hope not because that would be political correctness gone mad... I will assue not, but that you seek more information.
Also, google. Because marginalised groups get exhausted explaining things to well meaning ignorants all the time. Trans and cis are standard chemistry terms.2021 GC £1365.71/ £24000 -
I think you can blame pyschologists/psychicatrists for this. in the sixties and seventies they were VERY keen on 'Labels' EVERYBODY could have a label - then slowly this has turned completely around and they are now very reluctant to not only 'Label' people, but actually diagnose them. you have to jump through hoops to get a diagnosis and without one you have a snowballs chance of getting any 'medical or official' help.0

OK, so we've gone from cis- is a commonly used antonym, to cis- is standard in chemistry.
Let's assume that most of the population don't have a qualification in chemistry, and while we're at it how about stop name-calling people and playing the minority card.
Lots of words and phrases get bandied about and people are of course free to describe themselves however they want. The word pan-sexual was trendy at one point, and I think I've read the word ambisextrous on these forums, too.
It's interesting. Whenever one 'minority' group starts becoming more accepted by society, ie. stops being so special and unusual, sub-groups within that minority group start to pop up, re-label themselves and demand that people treat them with kid gloves.
Labelling theory, which I thought this thread was about, has nothing to do with that, though. Labelling someone is applying a descriptor to them, which in turn influences that person's behaviour in such a way that it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. For example girls were always told in the past that they were bad at maths compared to boys, which led to them believing they were bad at maths and hence underperforming in that subject.0 -
Why does cisgender annoy people - it simply means you identify as the gender that corresponds with your biological sex. Some people don't. Simple.0

I'm not in a minority. Women are marginalised, but not a minority in any real sense.
I believe the decent thing to do is educate yourself, in this high tech era, instead of waiting for others to do it for you.2021 GC £1365.71/ £24000 -

um - so whats wrong with the Labels of Man or Woman then? describes most peoples biological sex perfectly.
and sorry - I do NOT call MYSELF 'neurotypical' ,even though its used a lot by my DD when describing people who are not Aspergers/Autistic.0 -

Kids will identify people by something they can readily see - it's not abusive or offensive but just what they see, be it tall, skinny, black, ginger and more kids than adults seem capable of making distinctions without judgements. My son got hauled up in the school playground when his frend spotted a jacket had been left on bench; my son knew who it belonged to and told his friend 'oh it's Jamie's'...when his friend didnt know who Jamie was, my son clarified it by saying he was 'the tall blond kid with only one arm'. There was only one boy in the school with one arm, it was a statement of fact and my son got in trouble for it. But at least Jamie got his jacket back!0
