i took a paper and went through with DS as he did questions and pointed out the bits he was making silly mistakes to try and make him aware of being more careful.

Cherryscone, going back over every paper with them really helps iron out silly mistakes.

Yesterday DD got 82% in a past aqe paper in school so I'm delighted with that. She's been getting in the 80s in her tests at home but this was her highest score in a past aqe test in school. I told her yesterday morning that I'd give her a tenner if she got above 80 and it worked! She says bribes focus her mind:-):rotfl:

  • Hi all
I've lurked for a bit but needed to chat
I don't know if this is the right thing and I'm debating just opting for secondary

My son is June birthday ( just turned 10 in June 2015) very very immature , easily distracted lacks concentration

He wants to do the tests and we have both exams to do

Test scores ranged from 42 at start of p6(gl) right up to 84. % aqe so I know he can do it

Paper home from school over weekend gl English (50% give me strength) his answer I didn't read it I wanted out to play

He hates reading in general and gl English always weaker the spelling and grammar parts always good give it take one or two but he gets bored

On the other hand he prefers the gl maths but gets the harder questions right and wee easy ones wrong or silly mistakes

I need to point out that he is being tutored for the concentration issues to help him manage through the paper and due to the fact that 17 kids from his class doing test all whom are older 11 or very nearly 11 all have tutors or have had siblings done test previously so the experience is there

He has come home from school with a note for maths boost which I took this to be a bad sign but he actually thinks this is good as it will help him and keep things fresh before the exam

Tutor says yes he is slightly inconsistent in scores but is capable she has given him some tough maths problems and quote her she said j should be inspired by his effort

This is basically my point when he is in the mood he is fab but he seems to be lacking in enthusiasm I've backed off a bit in papers but starting back on it today and have now waved the money card in front of him and the eyes lit up

I know it's just a test and I'm feeling I still might even send him to a secondary if he scores good so to make him be at the top end if secondary than hanging on in granmar ( our secondary choices would be ballyclare secondary , ulidia or st Patrick's college ) all very good schools so I hear but I went to grammar wouldn't say I'm a high achiever or did anything different than what a secondary would have given me choice wise but that was the done thing then

I'm panicking now - primary school is useless nonindication all they say is he's immature and needs to settle down .
Transfer test is my child's choice he wants to do it and j Agee with doing it as whatever school he goes too he will have to have exams

I'm just worried to the point of no sleep and family stress that he will be disappointed or he will be the only child not to get it in his class cousin also doing it in his class who is just shy of 11 and there is a difference

I'm panicking about the scores going up and down and I'm thinking on the day it will click I just don't know

I'm sorry for the extremely long post

First time through this and I'm an obsessed monster now lol

I can feel your pain. Think it is maybe a boy thing too.

I went through the last four AQE practice tests over weekend that he had done in school and rewrote the 40 plus maths questions he had got wrong in the papers with different numbers etc and he got about 80% of them right. Making so many silly mistakes. Teacher says he is more than capable just need to iron things out.

Frustrating as he wants to do the test and is really insistent so I suppose his choice and have to support him all we can. But boy I did inwardly scream when he drops marks down to silly mistakes. I could see through if he couldnt answer the questions.

I can totally sympathise with you. My DS was consistent with 78-80% and has started to hit the 60's again!! I was cracking up last week too and was going to give up on the whole thing. I think that my DS has had enough and lost interest and it sounds like your son is the same. I was told by a parent at the weekend that 70% will be enough to get into our 1st choice. I have calmed down a bit now and I'm hoping it will all come together nearer the time. Don't give up yet!
