Piggywiggy - the only way they get deleted is by you and me hitting the spam button.

3 full pages on the credit card forum this morning.0

I find these tiresome, some kind of limits are a must otherwise the forums get flooded, just as the credit card forum this morning has with pages and pages of them.
I moderate on another forum, we use a plugin which blocks registrations from known spam IP addresses and allows us to block certain countries as well.
I am guessing these are not UK based, since this is a UK aimed forum perhaps blocking IP ranges from far off continents is an option, even as a short term measure.
Word seems to have got round that this forum is an easy spam target, so the bots come here to get their message out, they must be stopped before it becomes a whole lot worse and they become unmanageable. I've seen several popular forums die as a result of this and MSE could go the same way.0 -
Plenty of ways round simple blocks like that, and these spammers use it.Free/impartial debt advice: National Debtline | StepChange Debt Charity | Find your local CAB

fermi we don't want reasons why MSE can't/won't do things to limit these bots we want suggestions of ways TO limit them.
I do wish that you were not so quick on the trigger to shoot ideas down and if you have the technical knowledge to do that then try a few suggestions yourself.0 -
Not being quick to shoot anything for sake of it.
If it's something that is without doubt already being done, and is not really effective with this determined type as they can be circumvented relatively easily, then I'll will point that out.
On a technical level these things are difficult to stop without crippling or unfairly disrupting the use of the forum for everyone else. Especially genuine new posters in need of help.
I know it's frustrating when you see a boards full of that carp, and see where you are coming from. Don't misunderstand me.Free/impartial debt advice: National Debtline | StepChange Debt Charity | Find your local CAB

This is what we're conscious of when taking steps to stop the spam. We're always open to suggestions though so keep them coming

Those are individual spammers that are easily controled by use of the button, it is the ones that flood an entire board with 70+ that I am looking for help controling.0 -
