Honestly never thought about it as an enjoyable thing.

There are many things that smart phones do that are ...erm smart but as to finding them enjoyable that has obviously passed me by.

Wouldn't be without one though these days.

Well if your smartphone made things incredibly difficult or frustrating to do, you'd get rid of it and buy something else, wouldnt you?

I am wondering if people are taking the word enjoyment out of context. I enjoy going for a picnic but it is a different type of enjoyment with the iPhone. If it was hard to use, felt naff in the hand, had a blurry screen I wouldn't enjoy using it. It would be a chore.

I guess the whole why spend £600 when £100 will do is being touted because this is a money saving site. But that also means how much you can save by getting a good price for the things you need and also want. It's not just about denying yourself something because of the ticket price or because you have a want and not a need.

Like I say you can't take it with you so when all you die hard scrimpers and make doers save a hundred here and fifty quid there what do you do with it? Get to 80 years old and say hey I wrnt without this that and the other but look I've got a few digits in this bank book. As you keel over.

I have yet to find a phone that doesn't frustrate me in some way or other.

Which is why over the years I have tried different makes and different OS

Stick to an old dial operated landline then or a basic phone only mobile.

    Horses for courses.

I think you are right it it is about "value" to the individual, not the cost.

My earlier post wasn't meant to knock anyone spending money on an iphone, I was pointing out that there are cheaper alternatives that can do what an iphone does.

Having said that an iphone is, to me, better value than a cheap Android phone.

Neither would be useful to me when I am out and about.

    Well, with my phone, I:
    • Make phone calls.
    • Read emails.
    • Surf the web.
    • Use it as a Sat-Nav. (Replaces a Tom-Tom.)
    • Use it to find deals when I'm out.
    • Send and receive text messages.
    • Listen to music. (Replaces an MP3 player.)
    • (Can watch movies if I wish.)
    • Use it to authenticate logins to systems. (Replaces a SecurID device.)
    • A clock.
    • A calendar.
    • A camera.
    • A videocam.
    • A remote control.
    • A media player.
    • And probably a few things more.
None of those things in themself would be considered a toy, so I don't see why putting them al together onto a single device makes it one.

(It can do games too, but I don't recall the last time I played one.)

I've had to change my mindset to go to the iPhone 6; previously I've thought of them as phones which to other things, but the 6 is really a total communications device which includes making phone calls. I had thought that the screen was too big, but the above consideration makes that make sense.

I've not come across another device which is as complete as the iPhone 6.

It's all about personal perception. A friend of mine spends a lot of money on his toy. A sailing boat. As I'm not into sailing I can't puzzle out why he spends so much on it and why one rope is better than another.

So I think it's unfair to attack a thread creator asking about a phone by saying it's a waste of money and a toy. Perhaps grumbler wastes their money on some kind of "toy" in their life? Or perhaps they are happy to be thrown in the furnace with the hundreds saved here and there sitting in a bank book.

Yup - I took grumbler's comment as an opinion; it's a wrong opinion, but he helped me save some money, so what the hey.

Apart from the login in to secure systems I can do all the above on an Android or Windows phone.

Is the secure login in specific to iOS?
