  • Morning all,

When I lived in Wales only one of the local chippies in the smallish town I lived in used lard, the rest was oil. I also lived in Cardiff for awhile but there are too many there, but oil was predominant in my experience. I've also only encountered beef dripping chips once while living 'up north' and I had to make an extra effort to seek them out for the experience. Mind, I probably only get chippy chips once or twice a year these days, but when I first moved to the UK in my earlier student days I thought cheesy chips was an example of one of the finer local delicacies :rotfl:.

Today I'm afraid I'll HAVE to tackle the ironing pile.

I copied my sister after spending years doing 5 hours or more a week ironing. I put all the dried clothes away in drawers or wardrobe and iron them when I want to wear them. They get creased in there anyway so I only need to iron once now. I was horrified when she said she ironed every day till she explained about putting stuff away.

  • I've had cheesy chips out down Sarf before now.

Right - mental note - I know what the answer probably will be - but will make a specific point of asking any chippy I might wish to use (all else being equal) the specific question of "Is it possible for me to buy chips from you please?" and then explain the reason for asking them. Then wait to see what the answer is....

Fingers crossed - as I've noticed signs that my area is starting to become visibly more "foodie":D Where's that "down on knees praying" smilie when wanted? followed by a fingers crossed smilie:rotfl:

It would be less odd to just ask 'please can you tell me what your chips are cooked in?'.

Of course it is possible for you to buy chips from them (unless you're barred...). Whether or not you personally are able to eat them (whether for medical or ethical reasons) is another matter.

Given the way some oils reacted when heated, it may actually be better to deep-fry in animal fat.

Why not just ask if they use oil? It's a short simple question.

I went through a period of several years of not being able to tolerate animal fats of any sort following a particularly bad dose of food poisoning. It was easy to ask & find out that I couldn't have Harry Ramsden's fish & chips on the Prom during Lights season, but could have them from the chippy near the football ground. Luckily it settled down and Harry's chips are a standard accompaniment to our annual walk through the Lights!

  • And the ironing is finished..

OH uses the 'as you go method' he chooses his shirts for the week and does them but I can't decide even that far in advance and I'm not fast enough in the morning to do it before i leave. Most of what I have that needs doing is summer clothing anyway and I'd rather do it than give up my cotton and linen.

It isn't weird at all to just ask a chip shop what they fry in the reason I know is I used to hang about with some good friends who were veggies and it was their standard question. I think they might find it more confusing to ask if it is possible for you to buy chips there. To be honest, I've always found word of mouth gives a good indication before you even go in.
