Moussaka and chips. A delicious heart attack waiting to happen :rotfl:

MTSTM, I am being kinder to myself. I used to work a 60-80 hour week on my feet with much stress, responsibility and heavy lifting, them come home and make pasta from scratch. Life now is a walk in the park regardless of how much gardening I do.:p

And with our night in a hotel, we're going to see Henry Rollins. If I can get a bit of decent food, drink and shopping in too, it'll be a delightful holiday.

Have to admit that I (as an American!) find it baffling what comes with chips here--I guess that it must happen in your neck of the woods as well?

I always find chips with lasagne, pizza, moussaka etc. a bit baffling. I mean, I eat them and think it is brilliant because chip are delicious, but it wouldn't have occurred to me :rotfl:

    Enjoy your hotel night!
  • I find it baffling too re the chips I must admit and I'm British.

My standing joke is the only time I have chips is if I'm on a Slimming W*rld diet (ie their version of).

To me personally chips are in the context of an "egg and chips" based meal (eg egg/chips/baked beans) or eaten on their own as a snack with mayonnaise or there is "fish and chips". I would serve lasagne, pizza and moussaka with generous portion of salad and perhaps some garlic bread personally.

I do have to admit I really enjoy chips with inappropriate foods, especially if dining out. I like anything with a mincy base especially with chips, I introduced my husband to chilli and chips, it was a revelation!

I don't fry chips at home (and find oven chips unpleasant), so if we want any with anything they come from the chippy.

I find salad when dining out too often disappointing. I can't stand under ripe tomatoes, giant slices of onion or big lumps of iceberg lettuce. Now decent salad and I'm there.

  • Or for other inappropriate combinations, I love curry with either mash or a Yorkshire pudding -much nicer than rice.

  • Mardatha,

Dice, fry in a little oil then add to mince to stretch. If you top with Carrot & turnip mash it is good for the RV?

softstuff I have to agree with you over salad. When I had my op for the cancer they took half of my stomach so I could not eat for nearly a week. When they finally gave me something to eat rather than liquids they gave me a tuna salad. A rather strange meal I thought after noting for a week and having stitches in my stomach. The salad was just like you described.

Agree with you mar about the colour of aubergines but I don't like them.

Every time I had tomatoes after that for the next six months I felled a strange feeling in my stomach. I guess it was the equivalent of getting tomato juice in a cut.

normally I eat at least two tins of tomatoes a week and one or two tubs of those little plum tomatoes. I tend to eat them like sweets.

I make Rick Stein's moussaka from his Venice to Istanbul series...it has layers of aubergine, courgette & tomatoey mince...DH and I declared it the best moussaka either of us have ever had and is a do-again recipe :D

Floss: I've eaten moussaka all over the place but mainly in Greece. I don't know the Rick Stein version but if it's as nice as you say I must track it down.

I've often made it myself but one of my family couldn't stand a ubergines so I had to substitute potatoes. It turned it into a sort of upmarket, layered cottage pie. Not quite the same but very pleasant.
