Camelot: I have heard about volunteers being made to feel unwelcome before and cannot understand it. If I was ever running something and a volunteer turned up I practically sobbed with relief and gratitude.

This is something you have offered to do out of the kindness of your heart and while you are not looking for bouquets a tiny sign of appreciation shouldn't be too much to ask.
Life is too short to spend it being made unhappy and I feel sure that there is an organisation somewhere near you that would bite your hand off if you held it out.
I'm very surprised that this sort of atmosphere should prevail in a hospice. They are usually places of serenity and love.
I hope you enjoyed your swim.

Whatever happened there? Sorry to mystify everyone.

P.S.. Islandmaid. The first few days are horrid, empty bedrooms, only 2 places at table, the quiet, the absence of hordes of teenagers, the clean bathroom, the money left in the housekeeping purse, the uninterrupted TV programmes, the nights spent in sleep instead of anxiously waiting for the sound of the car returning, the quietness, (oh, have I already mentioned that), the speed with which the time passes until they are back and the whole merry-go-round starts all over again............

I actually felt great when mine left home - i must be the world's worst mother. but my sons both came back a few times - usually in between females - until they got settled. I will have my eldest son back some day, as my poor DIL has a terminal lung disease, but for now she's doing ok.

    Debt-free and Proud!
Hi all, thank-you so much for your kind words, advice and oh, I am well and truly hugged.

I forgot to say, three months after my Mum passed away, my Father called (he lived in Denmark), he said he was going away. I asked where, and he told me that with his bad heart and cancer, no more treatment was available. He wanted to see me before he went. I had no passport, so I scraped up the money, and sent away that day. I received a phone call, the day my passport arrived, I was too late! Now I'm not going to cry again relating this to you all.

I will sometimes post with a title of NEXT. This is a code all my friends use, when something else has challenged our lives. My Next happened yesterday, when my son that cannot read and write properly did a foolish thing on his tablet. His twin brother went OTT showing me that L had been looking at ISIS!!!! All hell broke out in my home! When I managed to calm everyone down, L explained that he was trying to find Oasis. NEXT

    My bargain Wednesday
I went to Wilkinsons to buy a new rotary clothes line on Weds. My old one lasted 15 years!
Well, it was a bit like buying shampoo, too much choice. The most expensive was £60!!! Far too expensive. The cheaper ones looked like the lines would break, so I settled on the mid range. There were 2 that looked the same, 1 was £15, the other £20- confused.com!!!
I found a young man to figure out the difference. After a while he said the £20 had more drying space, so I was just taking it to the check-out, when he called out that I would need a spike. Back I went, only 2 choices this time. The metal tube would need a man to bang it in, he said -- ooooooooo
I showed him my wedding ring. The other choice was a rigid plastic screw in type. "Rather like the drill I used in in the Hatton Garden diamond heist" I jokingly said.
Anyway, when the rotary was scanned at the check-out, it registered as £40." No £20" I said.
The nice young man came over, and told the girl, that as he had told me it was £20, then that is what I would pay. So, there you go girls, that's Wilkos rules. I saved £20.

Now, do any of you remember the old party phone lines. That is what it is like, joining in this long running forum. You would be in midst conversation, and another voice was talking about something completely different. Rather like, watchin a film half way through, not knowing the beginning.

To all those family history fans
It is true, that the Irish lost a lot of their BMDs and census returns, on pupose I would think (we all know the history). But, they also hid the church records, in the walls, under flag stones etc.
It was tradition to baptise a child within 2 weeks, as so many died back then. Marriage registers were also hidden, along with death. Many were written in Gaelic. It is just knowing where to look. I went to Dublin and found my ancestors, however, I think they were sent to rule the Irish as my maiden name is not Irish. My married name is Irish, I traced his family back from Scotland to Ireland. Mine were from Southern Ireland, his Glasgow. We also went to Glasgow, and traced the addresses on the census. So, when I was in Ireland, a local told me that there are only two sorts of people. Those people who want to be Irish, and those people who are Irish.

So that is it for today, nice bottle of Hock chilling for tonight, Time to catch up on my recordings from the week. Tissues at the ready for Long lost family. Drooling over Mike in Suits, and much more.

Horrid smell from cupboard under the stairs - I think that must be where the mice were nesting and now they're "late" mice :( (We put poison down in the end, and it hasn't been touched for a few days) Can't face hauling everything out of there, it's full of heavy boxes of stuff we don't use very often (but can't get rid of because we do use it sometimes, such as the electric drill and sander.) OH isn't well enough to help today in any case, but will have to sort it soon before the next time someone comes and asks to read the meter....... Hoping the smell won't last too long :( We've opened as many windows as possible!

Seems to be one of those weeks - It was bad enough the other day when I had to pick up bits of pigeon from all over the garden - I think a cat must have had it _pale_
