The worst smell I ever had a problem with was in my car, I searched the car numerous times to no avail. It was only when I had a flat tyre and had to change it I found a 6 month old packet of bacon under the boot lining and beside the spare wheel.

I had a bad night last night, firstly someone hammered on the front door just after 10pm, just some kids playing knock down ginger. Then hubby woke me up tapping on the pillow, I came downstairs about 2 am, fell asleep around 4:30, hubby woke me again at 6:30 as he woke up and wondered where I was.

I made us a cuppa, took hubby to work at 8:30, collected DD2 and dropped her at work, came home, tried to have a nap, hubby phoned. The booking he'd gone in to work to open up for had been cancelled so I went back and collected him.

I finally managed a nap at 11:30 for half an hour, I would have slept longer but a friend who moved to Devon a year ago. He phoned to ask if he could stay next weekend as he is visiting his Mum who is moving care homes. She will be just round the corner from me so I'm expecting to be asked to make occasional visits to keep an eye on her.

I'm adding a front page with the title, my name and word count to every one of my stories, in between hanging washing out.
    Chin up, Titus out.

Hi Hollysan, another newbie like me.
Today I wanted to start something new for us new comers, that way we can find some common ground. I also think it will help us all reflect on past times, and forget (for a short time) our own problems.
I have to songs that I play in my head, when emotionally, I feel drained.
If I want to stop crying, I hum 'Always look on the bright side of life' by Monty Python.
If I can't cry, but want to let it out, I listen to Elvis Presley 'We call on him' it's from his Gospel Album.
    Things I miss;
    Woolwoths - all those bargains
The post arriving in the morning
    Hospital staff speaking legible English
Being able to leave my doors unlocked when I went out
    Favourite Films forever:
    Gone with the wind
    The original Great Gatsby

Oh, I wanted to say that when I first started my family tree, I went to see my next door neighbour, he is a history proffessor at the local Uni. I took my census to him, to ask what a fancy box maker was, in the East end of London. WOW to both our amazement, his family lived next door to mine! Hundreds of years later, we found out that!

Oh, got to go out. Maybe come back later. TT
  • Hello and welcome to all the newbies!

    Welcome hollysnan :hello:

Tipsntreats Our post had been arriving later and later, but lately when it's been so hot it's been arriving in the morning again, so i suppose the postman is trying to avoid the hottest part of the day :) I have to admit the only times I've ever left my doors unlocked when going out was by accident :o

Welcome Hollysnan. Such a lovely, thoughtful, funny group here. I hope anyone else reading along will also come join in the conversation.

Softstuff, that was a lot of money for paperwork to have it end up somewhere in a warehouse! Fingers crossed that it gets sorted soon. How very crazy stressful.

I've just looked up crumpets and they are very much like our pancakes except for the addition of yeast. Are these still eaten much? I see more mention of scones on MSE.
Overprepare, then go with the flow.

mila I think of crumpets as a winter food, to be eaten dripping with butter on a cold evening :)
That's English crumpets - Scottish ones are a little different, yellower and sweeter, more like one of your pancakes in fact!

Oh Mila, English crumpets are sheer heaven. Especially as Ivy says, toasted on a roaring fire, spread thickly with butter so that it oozes through the holes and eaten on a cold, dark winter's afternoon. Of course you can put anything on them, honey, jam, cheese, poached eggs............but I'm happy with just butter.

Welcome hollysnan. I always warn newbies that they don't know what they are getting themselves into but if you've been reading along you will presumably have weighed up the risks. So come and join us.

Good luck with tracing your family trees all those who are busy doing just that. My father and one of his cousins spent some years doing theirs. No computers when they started but they had a wonderful time travelling around the country poring over ancient church records. The got a long way back but hit the proverbial brick wall. Stubborn pair that they were they persevered and eventually discovered that the person they were looking for seemed to have been one of the Gunpowder Plot plotters.
They quietly stopped at that point. Dad said that it was not something to be boasted about! Personally I don't see why, I've been tempted myself often.

Never really been that interested in ancestry myself but my boys are pressing me to write about my grandparents, parents, in laws and stories of my life growing up during the war,
for them and the grandchildren. They say that they don't want all these stories to die with me.
They appear to have completely forgotten that there is no blood link between them and my ancestors. I get very emotional when I think about that. Adopted or not they feel that these folk are truly their family - which they are of course, but through love, not blood.
