Whatever extras you get chucked on, you've still bought a brand new car which depreciates hugely as soon as you drive it away. You can dress it up however you like with warranties (which can be bought on the aftermarket) and a set of floor mats but you've still parted with stupid money for something that is no longer worth it.
Are you one of those who will only buy new houses as well as new cars? What a ridiculous statement to compare it to a shoe purchase.
Discounted service plans are just a ploy to get you through the door, they aren't nicknamed Stealerships for no reason. Service prices are hugely inflated in general and you can get just as good a service from a regular mechanic for less money.
I'm not blinkered, just not daft enough to be mugged into buying a brand new car. This is a money saving forum after all so no one should be too surprised by the varying reactions including mine.0 -

You can save money on a brand new car though .
Many things you buy lose value, but that is not the reason you buy it.
That said I would (subject to affordability) only buy a new car of a new car.
Like the poster above indicates, you choose your exact spec not have to depend on the 'mug' having chosen the spec you would like.
Luckily my personal circumstances allowed me to buy brand new more than once , I guess I could buy a house in a more affluent ward but that is an equal nightmare.
I'd say to anybody buy a new car at least once in your lifetime.0 -
Having just ordered a new car i'd love to see one of you guys find me a ex demo/nearly new car for the same monthly payment that i'm due to pay.
Effectively my car ~ £1k down, £128/month for 3 years (after that I probably wont need a car in the UK, or I may need a different car), I do about 8k miles a year. The car I've ordered does (manufacture claim) 60+mpg combined, has £20 tax for the 2nd and 3rd year and includes servicing. Obviously under warrantee for this time and no MOT.
I need 5 doors and A/C, as it happens I've ordered CC as well, as I've found I use this a lot in my current car, but could live without it.
One last thing, in 2 years my circumstances may change to the point I need to get rid of my small car and get one more suited to motorways.
So to show me what a 'mug' I have been please show me what I should have bought.0 -

In car ownership you suffer depreciation when you SELL the car. Clearly noone sells their car as soon as they drive it away.

No car bought from a dealer is worth what you pay for it as soon as you drive it away.
Even if you buy privately, a car depreciates towards zero over time anyway.
As has already been pointed out, there are MANY reasons to buy a new car, cost is not everyones driving factor.
You dont know what the O/P bought or how good a deal they got. You're making yourself look small minded and appear to have a chip on your shoulder with your broad brush "anyone who buys a new car is stupid" attitude.
Are you one of those who will only buy new houses as well as new cars? What a ridiculous statement to compare it to a shoe purchase.
My latest vehicle purchase (yesterday) is a 18 year old VW Caddy Van (into which someone has shoe horned a 2.8 v6 engine )
Purchase before that was a 9 month old VW Golf diesel on which we saved £8,000 off the list price of a new one (so it made sense not to buy new)
Purchase before that was my wifes z4, which we bought new, and got £10,000 of incentives to do so, and ended up with a cheaper car than we could buy a year old one for AND with the newest engine.
I can however see the merits of buying new, used or very used, depending on the individuals particular circumstances and personal requirements.
I wouldnt be so small minded as to broad brush everyone with a particular viewpoint and refer to them as stupid.
And why not compare it to a shoe purchase? Its no more ridiculous than what you're saying "anyone who buys a new car is stupid".
Discounted service plans are just a ploy to get you through the door, they aren't nicknamed Stealerships for no reason. Service prices are hugely inflated in general and you can get just as good a service from a regular mechanic for less money.
And your local mechanic can apply all the latest software patches, updates, etc to your new car can he?
No? Thought not.
We got 3 years servicing on the BMW for £299. Find me a reputable mechanic who'll use genuine parts, update with the latest software revisions, lend us a comparable car for the day, ensure the warranty is kept valid and return the car valeted for less than £99 a service.
I'm not blinkered, just not daft enough to be mugged into buying a brand new car.
Why has someone been "mugged" if they buy a new car and are happy with the deal? Whats the difference between getting a cracking deal on a new car and keeping it ten years, and buying a year old one and keeping it nine?
Genuinely - you're coming across as having a big chip on your shoulder.
This is a money saving forum after all so no one should be too surprised by the varying reactions including mine.
Theres "reactions" and theres decency. Calling the O/P "stupid" and saying they've been "mugged" is in poor taste.
You're entitled to your opinion, but its a very narrow minded one. Just because someone doesnt share the same view as you doesnt make them "stupid".
Oh, and MSE is about getting the best deal on what you want - NOT about getting something that you can "make do" with instead.
If someone WANTS a new car, and got a fantastic deal on it, then thats very MSE. If someone pays over the odds for a year old car, then thats not very MSE.0 -
What a ridiculous statement to compare it to a shoe purchase.
Another example - what about a new flat screen TV?
I could get £300 off a brand new one that would have cost me £800 using the boards on here or Hot UK Deals.
Would i be "stupid" because its only worth half that the moment i walk out the door with it?
No? Thought not
It would seem that with your terrible attitude and as per your username you are "Skint" in real life, therefore clearly have a problem with people buying something nice new.0 -

Draw whatever conclusions you wish but you're way off the mark assuming I'm skint but perhaps that's because I'm a bit more savvy when it comes to the motor trade than the average joe. I'm entitled to my opinion just like anyone else and you're not forced to read it. It's not aimed at any individual in particular so take it how you see fit.
You justify your purchase of a brand new car all you like but you won't catch me making the same error I'm afraid. Depreciation of a new car will always be more than on a used vehicle. Why anyone would pay the extra just because no one else has ever driven it appears to be a crap decision financially.
Enjoy your new motors all!0 -

When you physically come on to a post, on which the O/P has said they do not wish to be castigated for buying a new car, but asking is anyone else getting a new 15 reg car, and you come on with your particularly narrow minded view, then yes we ARE forced to read it.
Ever heard the saying, if you cant say something nice, dont say anything at all?
You justify your purchase of a brand new car all you like but you won't catch me making the same error I'm afraid.
I dont own a brand new car, and if i did i certainly wouldnt feel an urge to justify the decision to you or anyone else.
I dont see how it can be described as an "error" to buy new, if they can afford to do so and are otherwise happy with the deal, particularly when you know nothing about the deal in question, but instead are taking a broad brush approach and calling all new car buyers "stupid"
Depreciation of a new car will always be more than on a used vehicle.
Not necessarily. It depends what you paid for the new car, and what someone else paid for the used car.
If i buy a new car for £28,000 and sell it after a year for £25,000, but someone else buys a 3 year old one at £20,000 and sells it after a year for £15,000, who lost the most money?
Dont "assume" that ALL new car deals are worse than ALL used car deals. Its very naive.
We bought the z4 back in 2012 brand new for £28,000 (£7,000 off list price) when the dealer was trying to flog us a year old one with a lower spec and a bad colour combo and the old engine type for £29,000.
Who got the better deal? Were we stupid for not going for the year old one?
Why anyone would pay the extra just because no one else has ever driven it appears to be a crap decision financially.
Thats not usually the "only" reason. Try reading some of the reasons why someone may chose to buy new over used. That way you might develop an objective view, not just a narrow minded one.0 -

Enjoy your new motors all!
No one is saying you HAVE to get a new car, just because you wouldn't buy a new car, that is entirely up to you and your perogotive, it doesn't make you anymore savy than anyone else, it seems you are still trying to 'tell others' how they should spend their money
Have you considered that the purchasers may already have all the the other items that they wish for?
My previous new car I enjoyed every single mile driving it all 72000 of them, I just purchased another one as I felt like it and was bored of looking at a fat bank balance.
In fact what I sold it for was the price of the options on my current car
Do I enjoy the car? Of course I do !
Just as I enjoy other things in life, sometimes it's nice to own things rather than just read reviews on them.
