I'm also with Natwest and get paid the last day of every month so this month it should be today but hence it's a Saturday so my wage always gets put in on the Friday when this happens (this only happens with natwest,my colleagues wages tend to go in on next working day) my DD have also left the account due the 1st but are dated Monday. The only reason I tell my tale is I'm shocked your wage due 28th hasn't gone in early and so would of made no difference that the DD are pending. Hope you sort it'If you ain't living life on the edge you are taking up too much room'

Also with NW and they show Mondays DD on the Saturday, which can give a negative balance over the weekend !
If your money goes in on Monday then NO charges will be applied

These days are working days for many. The economy works 24/7. Why not have a 24/7 banking system.

As has been posted by pleasedelete, it's a NatWest thing. Credits and Debits transactions are applied to the account when the systems update after the previous working day. Other banks (e.g. like the HSBC) update their systems on the morning of the working day when the transactions happen. It's a subtle difference as it means that when credits and debits are due on a NatWest account on a Monday the account is affected on a Saturday morning from about 2.15am onwards.
If an account shows as being overdrawn over the weekend because of this the person actually has until 2.30pm on a Monday to bring the account back into credit to avoid charges, bouncing Direct Debits etc.
The other thing - and this is an option for the original poster as it can help them get access to funds over the weekend is to phone the NatWest or, too late for this one now, call into a branch (Saturday only). The following information can be found on the NatWest website:It is the weekend, why do I have less money than I should have?
If you find that you have less money available to you over the weekend or on a bank holiday than you expect, it may be because our systems currently take account of payments due to leave your account on the following business day, usually a Monday. This might be for example a direct debit or standing order (but does not include outstanding debit card transactions).
This should not be happening as the funds remain yours until the payment is due, and we are changing our processes to stop this from happening in the future. Until we have made the necessary changes, please call us on 0800 151 0404 or visit a branch if you need access to any funds that have been debited for this reason. This service is available on Saturdays in branch during normal opening hours and all weekend over the phone.
But please note that, subject of course to any overdraft facility you have previously agreed with us, you will need to make sure you have paid funds into your account by 2.30pm on the day your regular payment is due. This will ensure all your payments due are paid, and you avoid any unnecessary charges.0 -
Hi caroline233,
I think as previously suggested a 2nd account for cash/spending/fuel is needed. Leave wages and bills at NW and transfer to 2nd account on payday. I know this doesn't help your current situation but hopefully it will help going forward.
Finger's crossed you managed to sort it out.

Natwest has decided to take them overnight last night (27th February), leaving me £950 overdrawn, although I do t have an overdraft facility. Apparently that's normal and I simply have to make it through today without any money, or food for myself & the kids, plus will be charged for an unauthorised overdraft. Am I being unreasonable to think that's simply not on? I'm seriously considering moving banks, although they've been great until now & my local bank is very convenient for me. Do other banks do this too so I'll be moving to find myself in the same situation?
Providing you pay cleared funds into your account by 2.30pm Monday you won't incur any charges.
However this is being changed soon so I'm sure the complaints will start flooding in when people get paid on a Monday normally get access to their money on a Saturday.Im an ex employee RBS GroupHowever Any Opinion Given On MSE Is Strictly My Own0 -
while i have every sympathy with the situation you have been left in why have you no food? are you actually saying that there is nothing in the house to eat and that on the 27th it had all gone? to me its a grey area in banking i also would not set my direct debits up for the 1st of any month simply because of where you are now.0

I think its a mixture of Natwest and your work place.
My set up is exactly the same as yours, payday 28th and direct debits on the 1st.
The difference is if the 28th is a weekend or bank holiday, I get paid the Friday before, and if the 1st is a weekend or bank holiday, First Direct and Halifax take the direct debits and standing orders on the next working day, the Monday. So no risk of that happening.
If you know your employer will pay you after the 28th if its a non working day then moving the direct debits by a few days would be sensible.0 -
They don't. I bank with both Nat West & Halifax. Whilst Nat West do this system as OP is stating (which is a beneift when my payday is Mondays as it shows available on Saturday), Halifax do not as I have a couple of direct debits with them also.
It's never an issue for me as it is just solely for bills and the money in there is already allocated and not needed.
OP - maybe have two accounts one for your spending and one for bills/direct debits?Nationwide doesn't do it that way. Payments due in or out on a Monday won't show until the Monday.
Thanks for correcting me, I just, wrongly, assumed all banks used the same system. My apologies.0 -
