But it's not in his name so how do they know he was driving and it's been displaying a random plate that doesn't relate to the vehicle or OP.0 -

I read that the private plate was on the van when it was sold, and removed by previous owner at later date (in answer to my earlier questions)
If I've misinterpreted this, please let me know OP.💙💛 💔0 -

If it was sold with the vehicle then the previous owner has no rights to it so it would still relate to the OPs vehicle and of no use to the previous owner.0 -
The DVLA would not have disclosed information you mention if you were not the registered keeper due to DPA. I would be certain you are the registered keeper if the DVLA were willing to discuss the vehicle with you.0

Yeah thanks all, it must be that it's all registered ok with myself and current address and under correct reg as police letter has all details in just saying a fine and points for speeding0

The private plate that was sold on the vehicle looks to have been transferred at some stage during the sales process or shortly after.
Although they have no right to do this, the OP doesn't seem to fussed about it and it was 2 years ago.
The OP mentioned they weren't sure if the V5 was in their name, but since the NIP has came to their address and in their name that verifies the details on the V5 are likely to be right, even though they don't have the V5 to verify just now.All your base are belong to us.0 -
So the police have contacted you now for a speeding offence in December? Why the delay? Is it possible the V5 is in fact registered to your father and he got the original speeding notification and then identified you as the driver to them?
Call the DVLA. They will tell you over the phone if you are the registered keeper (well they did for me anyway) but if you aren't they won't tell you who is.0 -
It gets worse... Just found a letter off partner from when I'd moved out with speeding letter from mid last year on the private plate when I bought the van, together with last weeks speeding letter from December with the new plate details... They both had my name and address stating I'm the apparent registered keeper, yet I've had vehicle tested this morning and tried to tax yet been declined, rang dvla and the guy said its not registered in my name yet police saying it is? I need to use the van and need it taxing but can't as the new owner slip is in previous reg, it's doing my head in and so stressful... Am I even liable for tickets as the guy who I bought it off hadn't sent the slip off and have this mess with private reg issue? It's such a mess, I admit I probably haven't helped situation by leaving stuff but just need it sorting if any experts?0

I take it the police checked out insurance details for the vehicle and my details came up so thats how they think it's registered to me? Can accept the penalties but it can't be both ways one saying I'm the owner yet dvla saying not?0
